D400 Dilemma

I've been waiting for an announcement about the replacement for the D300s for some time now. Lots on Nikon Rumours about the mythical D400 but very little solid information.

I have the chance to move to a used D3s body but that won't stay available for to long. I'm struggling to work out whether to stick with the D300s and wait for its replacement or upgrade to the D3s. Unfortunately, the D4 is out of the question due to its high cost and the D800 appears to be more at home in a studio than out in the field photographing wildlife.

I'm sure TP members will have plenty of views what to do. I look forward to hearing your views.

just get the D3s and you will be one happy man. All that D400 is purely rumor etc.

Why waiting for something that doesn't exist yet.

Just be aware that if going to a D3S from a D300S that you will lose the 1.5 focal length multiplier that you get with the crop sensor, might be a significant drawback if you're mainly shooting wildlife. Aside from that, the D3S is where my money would go.

Be aware that the D800 will let you do some pretty heavy crops which will make up for the loss of crop factor..

I wouldn't be waiting for a D400 any time soon. All current rumours point to a D600 FX sensor in a D7000 like shell. I've seen little to nothing about a D300s replacement recently.

The D3s is a fantastic camera. I cant see any reason not to buy one. Why wait for something that may never come, and even if it does, it might not be what you want, and will be hugely overpriced plus will be under produced and over subscribed like every new Nikon body.

The D3s is likely to be as good as a replacement D300 anyway so I wouldn't even consider waiting around if you can get a good price.

D3s. It's likely that whatever the successor to the D300s and the rumoured D600 won't be as good as the D3s anyway so I'd definitely go for that!

Yes. I don't think you can buy anything for better value right now in the Nikon back catalogue.

Of course it depends on what you want it for. I personally wouldn't get it but I shoot high ISO a lot and need the video, if I didn't need those 2 things I might have gone for it.

D300 is good to buy used. Is around £400-500. Fantastic camera i bought mine last year originally to be used as backup to my D7000 but ended up using it as my main and my d7000 become backup and travel camera lol.

You can always sell the D3s should you later decide to go D400 (or whatever). I'd go for it
