Well in truth the D3s -> D800e wasn't really an upgrade path if you had high ISO and fps as key criteria - a move to a D4 would have been more suitable (albeit marginal from the D3s).
Having owned a D3x in the past, and as a current D4/D800e owner I couldn't possibly answer that question until I see the actual specs. The D3x has worse performance in ISO and fps than the D800e, and arguably DR, and with the exception of build quality and full compatibility with the 24mm tilt-shift PCE lens I'd say that the D800/e is a step forward for many photographers. What the D4x might offer above that is speculation - but if there is a D4x launched then you would expect it to exceed something - question is if I'd *need* it - or would see an incremental return on the investment which if I'm honest is diminishing now that DSLRs are reaching maturity in quality of image and usable lifetime .
it won't however be a sports/journalism body and so it will still likely be a poorer performer on fps than the D3s and may not greatly exceed low light capabilities. It is likely to be a very high end studio camera fulfilling the D3x mission and going beyond the D800 for resolution. How that copes with the current lenses and diffraction will be another thing.
It sounds like a D4s (also unannounced and unknown specs - but in the cycle likely to come in 2014) might be a more suitable body to speculate about.
