D50 screen and surround smashed

Sadly upon taking my suitcase out of the car following a trip I failed to remember I'd opened it during a stop-off. My D50 fell out and the screen has smashed along with part of the housing around it.

It looks a bit in-depth to do a repair so does anyone know the best way to get this fixed? Would it need to go to Nikon for a full service/repair or do other companies specialize in this type of thing? If so can anyone recommend one please?

Alternatively do you think it'd be better to claim off the insurance as the body itself is involved?

Thanks

I would say get Nikon or a specialist to look at it first, the sensor may have suffered in the fall, they are quite delicate and don't like shocks, that is some clout that camera has had.

Thanks. Will do. Typically it only fell from boot height but landed on a gravel carpark. :(

Would have thought that this was just the sort of event that insurance was designed for.

That's bad luck Steve, regarding repair, I'm sure John Forrester at Hales Owen Photo Centre will give you honest advise (0121 585 5021) even if he recommends sending back to Nikon. If you go the insurance route you not only have to think about excess and NCD, but in the event of the cost of repair not being viable, what will they offer to replace it with as the D50 has long been discontinued. I'm sure you know that the current entry models have no internal motor which can be important if you have older lenses. So unless they can replace it with a D90, which is probably unlikely, I would explain about the motor situation and try to get cash, then you can try and find a used D50 or D80. Hope this has been helpful.

Thanks for the reply and for the contact. I will contact him tomorrow. That was my concern going down the insurance route so I assume Nikon will still have spares for it so assuming it's just the screen and casing I think I'll end up paying for a Nikon repair. :)

Email Lehmanns. They have been good to me in the past for spares, including screens.

It's not a big job to replace the screen, just a few screws and a ribbon to unplug. Iirc the parts are pretty cheap too, I think the LCD panel can be bought (aftermarket) for not much over £30,although if you have a look in the classifieds there was a compete spares/repairs D50 for £50, if it was me I'd buy that and swap the backs over, it's a 5 minute job...
