D5000 and off camera sb900

As the D5000 had no inbuilt commander can I still use the sb900 as a dumb off camera flash setting it up manually or do I need an Su800 or similar to trigger it remotely?

You can set the SB900 to trigger optically in SU-4 mode and adjust the power manually on the flashgun.


Edit: You need to make sure your onboard flash isn't sending out a TTL pre-flash as that will trigger the SB900 a fraction of a second before the shot.
