D5000 help needed

My Dad has a D5000, and has been complaining that it takes ages to AF, and will not shoot quickly like my D300. Now, I know that the FPS is less, guessing that its 3 or 4 FPS, but I have to keep releasing the shutter before taking another pic. Looked through the menu and can't see how I can make it faster. I am sure my old D40 and D90 were not as slow as this.

Any ideas what may be making it slow?? Using a Sandisk Extreme 30mb/s card so can't be that. Tried using jpg instead of raw but that makes no difference.
 
Are you saying that it's not set to continuous or that it is but it's not clearing the buffer fast enough to actually shoot continuously? I've only used single-shot on mine but even shooting RAW + LF JPEG it seems to save as fast as I need.
 
Cant find a continuous setting or to set on single shot, but seems to be taking on single shot.
 
Have you tried changing the memory card? Might be a dodgy card. What focus settings are you using?
 
Have tried all the AF modes and the same result. Will hunt around for a card but I think he has tried more than 1.
 
If you switch to manual on the lens does it shoot continotously. That would tell you if its AF related. Have you tried resetting the camera to factory settings.
 
No, it is a bit quicker but not by much. It seems to take pics ok but you need to keep lifting finger off shutter after each shot. I think I just need to work out how to put it onto a burst mode?

move cursor top right 4th one down release mode :)
