The more i look at DSLR's the more i am drawn to thje Nikon D5000. The only thing that puts me off, is the price!! I admit i really only want to spend a max of £400 on a DSLR and at approx £470 plus extra warranty (Jessops 3 year warranty) it puts it at a hefty price!!

The other 2 cameras i have been looking at are the D3000 and the forthcoming A290 by Sony! Both under £400.

See there are a lot of people with the D3000 and are very happy with it.

Then i see others people saying it is not such a good camera etc etc etc!!

I'd forget the Jessops "warranty", you get a 2-year manufacturer's one, anything else can be covered either by your house insurance or a cheaper camera insurance policy.

I thought the 3 year warranty seemed great as it also allows for dust issues on the sensor etc?

Anyway, the D3000, is it really a good camera in its price range?

good though the D3000 is (being a D60 with better focussing essentially) its ISO performance above 400 isnt as good as the D5000 which uses the better 12mp sensor from the D90/300. The 5000 also has the articulated screen, which could be useful for taking pictures at odd angles. Overall I think the 5000 will offer better long term value....and give you more scope as your photography improves.

D5000 is much better - I've been recommending them to everyone at this price-point since I played with a mate's a while back.

Warranties - no matter which sort or for what period of time - won't affect things like dust on the sensor as that's 'normal wear and tear' and down to the way you look after the camera.

hi.
I have the d5000 and it is fantastic, quite easy to use when you know what does what!!
as for jessops sensor cleaning, I wanted mine done. They send them away so you are without it for at least a week according to the guy in the shop.
£10 for swab's and cleaner, five minutes of your time and it is done.

sold my D40 here....and got a D5000 from er er the local store Comet ...:$.....at £479

and sold the kit 18-55 DX on here

only been out twice - but well pleased...........

I recently down graded to a D5000 . . . However, I have found less is more . . . :)

I had to change my D80 because I could no longer read some of the settings on the shoulder screen. Bought a D90 . . . had trouble getting to grips with the 90, constantly favouring my stand-by D40X . . .

Cutting a story short . . . decided to 'go to back to basics', sold all the kit, the lot! accept an old Nikon 18-70 kit lens. Ignored all the peer pressure, D300!!! I wanted light, simple and an animated screen so that I could cope when my back and knee playes up.

Best move I have made, the D5000 simply get on with the job I set it to. RAW or JPG the picture balance is to my liking, (never did get the 90's colour ballance right) The D5000's only short coming . . . the numpty operating it . . .

What happens when you attach another lens, I have not idea, I have not felt the need . . .

Well, its the price that is pulling me back at the mo and because of that i am waiting for the new arrival of the Sony A290 withing the next 10 days, according to my local Jessops. That is being priced at £390.

I did try the A230 and liked it a lot, except for the grip so i will see what the A290 feels like etc.

In reality, the D5000 is just too much for my budget at this point in time. I do like the D3000 too but lots have told me not to go for it as it is old tech etc etc. I am a bit wary of buying 2nd hand, over the net.

Koolpc - why don't you try haggling? search out the very best internet deal for the D5000 and take it to jessops - I did this when it first came out, and got about £70-80ish knocked off the price, plus Nikon were doing a £50 cashback deal at the time on all new DSLRs.

Don't be frightened about asking for money off - these large camera shops need your business and are willing to do deals to keep your custom, as after all, if you get what you want you're more likely to come back time and again to them ;)

I did try asking Jessops to knock the price down but the refused!
