Yes
I have little experience to go on ,years ago I used film had a long brake and then got a D60.
Now even in a studio which I do most of my shooting I am finding it difficult to get good exposure without the odd blown highlight (shooting raw).
So is the dynamic range of the D60 a bit limited compared to film or is my lighting just cr@p .
If it is poor dynamic range how far up the price range do I have to go (sticking with Nikon) do I have to go to get an significant improvement .
My budget will not let me have the lenses I would like and a new body

I've just upgraded from a D60 for precisely this reason. I noticed the limited dynamic range on the first few pictures I took. In auto the camera was worse than your average £100 compact. In manual if dialled in some some exposure compensation it was just about OK. I came the the conclusion that I had brought a lemon as no one else on this site had a bad word to say about it. I've now got a Nikon 3100 this has a new CMOS sensor and seems to be much more forgiving.

Are you using D lighting? it helps a bit.

I'm sure I read before that the D60 is prone to over expose, or fail to meter acurately. I have just bought a D90 and I've yet to acertain how it copes, but I nearly always slightly under exposed with the D60 in manual mode to prevent blown highlights.

I shoot manual with studio flashes anyway but do not like underexposing as that brings in noise, however with the exposure right for most of the shot anything a bit reflective blows out.
At a guess the most i am getting (shooting raw) is about 5 stops range .
So to get a bigger range how far up the price range do I need to go to one or two more shops of range, as shoot manual nearly all the time most of the bells and whistles are not needed

Now you have me thinking I need a better camera so I can go to a d5000 or for an extra £200 the d90 now the d90 can use af lenses which are cheaper than af-s therefore am I likely to save enough on that difference with say a 35mm prime and a good mid zoom plus not having to upgrade again for a longish time
