D600-Need Help With New Lens...

80-200mm afd two ring is a cracking lens,had mine up for sale recently but decided to keep it.You could also look at the sigma 70-200mm range but if it were my money I would stick with the nikon unless you want OS
 
yeah ive read the reviews about it! its not for sports or anything just out and about, maybe wildlife. so not too bothered about fast AF.

No not bothered about OS, il just keep a look out for one of the older nikons at a decent price!
 
:DThe AF on the nikon is more than enough for sports..I use mine every week for football on a d300s its plenty quick enough

I had one and it was excellent but I've also heard a few people say their's weren't sharp particularly wide open, which defeats the point in having a 2.8 lens in my opinion. I think this is unfortunately fairly typical of Sigma lenses. If you get a good one it'll be excellent, and perhaps in this example better than the Nikon 80-200 when you take focus speed into account. The Nikon is probably the safer better though in terms of ensuring you get a goodun.

And just to throw a massive spanner in the works, I recently paid less than £700 for a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1. I had to delve into the murky world of ebay and it has a few scuffs (ex hire lens from Calumet) but it did come with a 3 month warranty... I know it would require a slight 'massaging' of budget and some patience but its a stunning lens.

Thats a decent price for the VR. but £600 tops is my budget as its just a hobby, nothing serious.

Made my mind up, well kinda. Gonna go for the 80-200mm nikon, but then its between the AFD and the AFS. But these are older lens. would it be a good idea to invest in one of these in this day and age, and on my D600?
 
For that focal range and your budget in my opinion there isnt better out there.Despite the age of the lenses they are both fantastic and the af-d is still available new today!

Shame you werent on here a week or so ago else you could have had mine.
 
if you dont want zoom then nikon 300mm F4 its not 2.8 but close and in budget.

I have a Nikon 70 - 300 VR 4.5-5.6 and although I appreciate 2.8 is lovely I have learn't a few tech tips that are realy making this lens sing and it can be had for half your budegt and if you want to move a used one on you will lose not a penny. I paid £280 for my mint one.

The 80-200 is very close to the 70-200 in terms of iq. Thing I don't like is that's I don't think u can remove tripod collar! I have had a couple of these and may be putting it up for sale on here as I now have an 85mm prime and a 300mm f4.

The other downside is they don't float (my other one ended up in a stream)! Aside from that great iq, fast enough AF (have had a 70-200) and not much slower, and very well built. As mentioned, sigmas are very hit and miss plus the rubber coating seems to peel.

Ha ha ha.!!! But solid lens. I am thinking of getting the 80-200 for D300s too. Thinking of going for D800 in the future so will be good companion.
