D600 video playback

Hi all, got myself a d600 on the weekend, and so far so good, I traded in my 550d and a few lenses and bought a d600 and a 50mm 1.4G as I mainly use my dslr for video.

My question is, when I record a video, I get everything exposed correctly (always using correct shutter speed, 2x the fps) and hit record. Then though, when I play the video back on the camera the video is quite a bit darker than it looked in live view when I recorded it?

Anyone have any ideas, or had a similar experience??

Hi Phil, sorry maybe I wrote that slight wrong, the video plays back on the LCD on the rear of the camera. So it looks fine when I have live view on, and when I'm recording the shot, then when I play it back on the camera itself, the footage is darker?
 
I'm not sure? I think the screen brightness is set to 'auto'. Is that what you mean? Or is there another setting I'm not aware of?
 
Live view often does this, both in Movie mode, or camera mode. Why not actually take a light reading with the camera's meter and then switch to live view and input the settings your light reading suggests instead of just adjusting things until they look right on the screen?

Hi all thanks for you info and help. I tried setting it up out of live view but and then switching back but this doesnt work, as you dont get the histogram or exposure bar in video mode. With my Canon, I would frame in live view, set the aperture, and ISO so it looked correct, and as i say keep to shutter rules of double FPS, and that's how it would playback.

I think I have worked it out though. My LCD settings were set to 'Auto' brightness, so i think when actually filming it was recording as it was on the screen, but when i hit playback in camera, the auto kicks in and the screen dims down a bit. This morning I very quickly turned on the camera set the brightness to manual -0, recorded a quick clip, and when played back it looked the same. If you get what I mean?? :thinking:

You don't really need it. You can establish correct exposure in normal camera mode, then just use those settings for that scene in video mode. So you probably want to use 1/50th, so just get an ISO and aperture for that speed, and use it in video mode.

That's what I tried to say - just didn't know how to help once you said you didn't know lol. Good you sorted it.
