D610 Focus Points

I'm planning upgrading from a D7000 to a D610 as the time is right to give full frame a go while it's affordable. My only concern is reading about the focus points on the D610 being congested in the middle of the frame. Now, I would usually get myself down to a camera store and check it out myself but the chances to do that will be limited in the next month or so.

My question is have any users had any problems with this? I'm not to keen on using the focus-recompose technique often and I prefer using the nearest focus point ( which, when I'm shooting, can often be one of the outside focus points. I would particularly like to hear from anyone who has upgraded to D610 from D7000 for any general differences regarding this.

Iain, you can have a read of the D610's manual on the Nikon UK site and that should show you where the focus points are. Personally, I always use the centre point and recompose since the centre point is the fastest and most accurate (or at least was on my older bodies but things may have changed) so wouldn't miss the wider spacing the D800 has if I downgraded. On a plus side, if you can wait a little while, I would guess that there might be a few price cuts after the commercialmas buying frenzy is over and stores try to lower their stock levels again!
 
That's a good point. Might wait until after silly season and see if I can hit a bargain. I've always been wary of focussing and recomposing as was under the impression that the focal plane would change, especially if shooting at the wide open end of things? I also use continuous focus (kids & dogs) so need to use the outside points a lot as focus-recompose doesn't really cut it with this!

I'm also a D7000 owner who's thinking of jumping to FF (not thinking actually, I AM moving to FF). I've agonised every day for a while now whether to get a DF, D610, D800 or the D3s. If the D3s wasn't so prohibitively expensive 2nd hand, I'd jump to that first. I ruled out the D800 pretty quickly as it's just not for me. The DF is tempting but one card slot doesn't do it for me. That left the D610. The only downside for me was the 39 AF points although giving this an awful lot of consideration, I've decided I can live with that.

The more I read about the D610, the more I like. There's lots of positive reports about the D610 and the only persistent criticism is the clumping of the AF points in the middle. I'm pretty sure we all make the odd sacrifice when buying a body as there's probably some feature that's either missing or wrong for us. In the real world, it's going to be super-rare for someone to have a camera that's 100% perfect for us. It's just how we deal with the niggles.

There's also the chance you could buy from somewhere decent like John Lewis or Amazon who have excellent customer support. You'd be covered under the distance selling regulations if you ordered online.

One big bonus for me about the D610 is the battery is the EN-EL15. This is the same as my D7000 and V1! I'll be getting mine from Grays of Westminster as they're doing body plus official grip for ~£1500ish. I'm keeping my D7000 as sending my D7000 off to HK for a replacement is something I don't want to do ever again. I was lost without my camera and was a right miserable s***.

I'll be waiting until January as there's not a massive rush to buy one as it's not in the Nikon cash back scheme.

The D800/e has 2 card slots - 1 x CF & 1 x SD...
Both can be populated at the same time..

It also has the same battery as the D7000.
