D70 Dead LCD?

OK, was out doing some stuff in the big city today when the LCD screen on the D70 just went white. Well, sort of grey really. Camera still working, still taking pics but every time the LCD comes on it's this blank screen. Now and again it's half light grey and half a bit darker but mostly just grey... is this yet another Nikon that has died on me - I have to say it never happened with Canon, but the D1x has a dodgy switch and now this... :(

It may well be that the plug to the LCD has simply come loose, it's relatively straightforward to open a D70 up, you just have to be careful not to damage the cable between the main board and LCD when removing the back.
 
Ah - well I suppose that's good news... but despite quite happily pulling film cameras apart, and designing astro-digital cameras, I am rather reluctant to dig into a dslr for some reason! Bit like laptops - there's always a screw hiding somewhere that takes ages to find! I'll try and build up the courage to go in I think :)

If anything is broken internally let me know, I have a scrap D70 that I use for spares, so if there's a bit you need and it's still on my scrap one you're more than welcome to it :thumbs:

So, still none the wiser. Opened it up, everything looks perfect in there - all the ribbons snugly in place and nothing else obviously awry. Dammit :(
 
That's not good news Arthur.:thumbsdown: The problem is that the D70 is at least 5 years old & probably not worth repairing now. But look on the bright side mine still works Ok :D sorry

A white LCD still suggests to me that one of the cables is unplugged or damaged.

The cable to the righthand side (next to the battery compartment) is also involved with the rear LCD and can come loose down in the depths of the camera.....

Ah... well removing the rear plate with the LCD on it (so in the process checking the top ribbon both ends) made no difference - the other on the end of the board I only checked the one end of - as you say it's down in the bowels of the camera and I'm not too sure how to get to the other end?

Hope you get this sorted. It is not good, only your 2nd Nikon and not happy. :(

It's a bit of a figet, but I can't really see how it would have come loose anyway, usually it's only an issue after a strip down for an IR conversion or similar. Then it's dead easy to leave slightly loose :whistling: Has the camera been dropped or bumped?
 
No, nothing like that - it was on the strap all afternoon, just decided not to work for no apparent reason I could see. It's still usable but it's a bit like a film camera now - you don;t know what you got until you get home!

:lol: - I already have some film cameras though! I am wondering if I can claim on my insurance but as there was no "accident" I am not too sure...

Well, spent a couple of days back with the D1x and getting to like it again... means I either leave this as-is, sell it as-is or go back down inside to see what I can see. I have hit the soft resets and get no response - the hard reset has the effect of allowing the buttons to alter the screen inasmuch as I can get grey stripes coming down slowly, or fading to white slowly... I am thinking that will mean the LCD itself is toast now?

I've got a spare D70 LCD, but I don't know if it works, I'd need to try it on a camera, it could be knackered too :shrug:
 
Hmm... if it works, would it be for sale maybe? I would need to confirm somehow that this one is the actual problem though, no idea how to do that.

OK then, I have the D70 now on Ebay and so will soon be looking for a replacement. I currently still have the D1x and am wondering where to aim for? The more I use the D1 the more I like it but it is a bit of a handful and though it might not be much, that lack of a popup flash is a bit of a pain on the vary rare occasions I need one... not often enough to make it worth carrying one seperately. Clearly, funds are low and it would be nice to stick to Nikon but... well, they have not exactly covered themselves in glory from my point of view with my only two Nikons going t*ts up inside the first couple of weeks. I still find myself looking at Canons... but that would mean *another* complete change of kit again :(

What do I do now? Stick with the D1x for a while? Chase a D80/D90 maybe? Or flip to Canon again (not a good option though, and "Canon is better" arguements won't wash since I know imagewise they aren't any better or any worse).

Probably best to go for the newest camera you can afford, they're just pieces of consumer electronics nowadays.There's always going to be the chance of one dying on you, regardless of how old or what brand it is though....
 
If you get something that is more current such as D80/D90, you will notice a massive improvement on handling. Just so much nicer to use. For around under £400 there are Nikon D200s about, often quite a bit under 4 as well. They have great AF system, 5fps, fairly large LCD, and they are getting much closer to the build of the 1x. D90, not the same build, but being newer has all the mod cons, and I think gives better quality, though thats probably for pixie peepers! :)
 
Okidokee, an update here. Following the (welcome) advice from Graham (fitp) I went for a new LCD screen at £20 delivered from the US. Arrived and fitted today, D70 is now all working perfectly once more :thumbs:

Excellent cheap repair, you'll be converting it to IR now that you know how easy it is to take apart!
 
Glad to hear you sorted it, I had something similar with an ipod, screen went so rather than bin it I bought one on ebay..

Bit fiddly, but was well chuffed when it all worked.

I think it`s the only electrical thing I`ve taken apart that`s worked again!
