This week i have been taking my D700 around with me so i can really get to drips with it.
So i can use a small holster bag i attached my 50mm F1.4 G which until now had only been used indoors.

I have to say for such a cheap lens i have blown away with the sharpness, AF speed and picture IQ.
I have a feeling this little lens will not be coming off any day soon and i am really enjoying finding new ways to shoot with it.

Does anyone else love this combo?

Love the combination - it rarely comes of one of my cameras
 
It's a funny thing..... years ago the 50mm lens was the 'standard' lens (kit lens, if you like). I seem to remember that it was the done thing to get something else to use and was considered hip/kewl not to be using a 50mm :bonk:

How come? My used 50mm 1.8D (£75 from MPB in Exc++ condition- BOSH!) should arrive today for me to use on my D300s. With the crop factor I thought it would be just right for head shots, candids, parties etc. Hopefully I'll like it on my crop
 
Ummm... the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 cheap?
£288 for a 50mm isn't cheap in my book...it's a professional-spec optic, what else would you expect but that it's a good lens...:cuckoo:

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 at £106 - now that's cheap...

That's the ridiculous thing..... there wasn't a crop option 30 years ago, it was all full-frame 35mm film (unless you count a hal-frame option)

Sorry i meant cheap as i paid £200 used and for me that kind of money on any other lens apart from a Tamron 17-35 would probably dissapoint.
 
I went into London the other day armed with nothing but the D700/50 1.4 combo.

I loved it and to be honest I use this a lot more than the 24-70. I can't wait to get another D700 now so that I can permanently have it attached to one body.
 
For a G lens very nice that you got it for 200... I went for the 1.4d new from 220. My wife loves it even on the d300 with crop.

I found it a little to long although minimum working distance was 30cm. So I recently obtained a 30mm sigma f1.4. Just working out the bits n pieces with it ;)

50mm f1.4d sweet is f4 (crispy sharp).

I use the 50G on a D300 and don't get on with it at all, 90% of the time the focal length feels either too short or too long. In fact, it's more of a field of view issue than focal length. Much prefer my 35mm or 85mm primes.

That said I shot a floodlit motorsport event just this week. Conditions were ISO2000 (yes, 2,000) 1/20 f/2.8 and the 50mm just seemed the best tool for the job. I was trackside so reach wasn't an issue and the focal distance meant f/2.8 gave enough DoF where at the short end of my 70-200 I would have needed to stop up to f/4 or more. With the 3D tracking the focus was pretty reliable but I'm not *that* blown away with the lens's focus when shooting people - I often find it won't latch on to a subject.

Given my love for the 35mm I think I'll really enjoy the 50mm when I go full frame.

This is interesting.....

35mm ≈ 50mm
85mm ≈ 135mm

.... on a DX sensor

Next somebody'll say they really like to use a 20mm prime (≈ 28mm on DX)

28, 50 and 135 were all the major lens offerings in "the day"! :help:

Only ever used zooms "in the day" but fast glass is cheaper than buying a body with two extra stops of usable ISO, hence moving to primes.

The crop-equivalent lengths are so well documented I didn't think it necessary to reiterate. Mine was more an open point (to crop users) about 50mm not being the panacea it's often touted as.

Funny you mention the 20mm prime, that's my next purchase ;)

love my little 50mm. Stays on one body most of the time on a wedding because it's fab for just catching those little "moments" I would otherwise miss by having the "wrong" lens on. With no grip on my second body, it's really easy to have it slung over a shoulder ready to go.

Grrrr! You know what I mean! I meant to put DX not FX

All I was trying to illustrate was the fact AndWhyNot had/is 'rediscovering' the old ideals.

Since you're quoting Dx equivalences, 35mm gives the equivalent FoV as 52.5mm and 85mm equivalates to 127.5mm and 20mm to 30mm (using the usually quoted crop factor of 1.5x for Dx)

I like the 50mm on FF and 35mm (and as a portrait lens on Dx), although I use a 24-70 as my general walkaround lens on FF and film now. Mine is a cheap old f/1.8 AF, not even a D lens but it's as sharp as a sharp thing and tiny.
 
Talking about kit lens(as supplied with a 50mm F1.8 in the old days) The build quality of the Canon was excellent compared to the now canon 50mm f1.8 which the build quality is poor. But the new one has a resolution which exceeds the old one.
 
I've got zooms but mostly like my primes for the fantastic bokeh you get with them.

I found the 50mm to be useless on my D700, but on the D300 I used to have it was brilliant. And also very lightweight which is welkom sometimes when you have to lug it around.

The 50 1.4G however is a lovely lens and in combo with the D700 will give you excellent results.
