D700 D3 shutter noise

Gear lust. My best mate has just acquired a D3. I was with him when he picked it up. The moment he fired the shutter I wanted one. I've managed to convince myself that the shutter on my D700 is much louder.
Anyone got both and can give me the definitive answer ?
I shoot quite a bit of indoor Dressage and a quiet camera would be advantageous.

You're thinking of upgrading from the D700 to a D3 purely for the sound of the shutter :p .. this has got to be the first time I hear this as a motivation factor, and frankly I :thumbs: for being brave enough to admit it. If this is the case, I think Nikon ought to give you a D3 simply for loyalty to their acoustics' engineers.
 
D3 is slightly quieter than the D700. Why not go the whole hog though and get a D3s which has a "quiet shutter" mode. Not totaly silent but a bit better than normal mode and certainly quiter than the D700.

Has anyone actually got one in stock? A few people say they have but then when you ring them...:thumbsdown:

I think that you're slightly missing the OP's point. This is nothing to do with acoustic appreciation such as it might be with a cars engine note and everything to do with unobtrusive shooting. There are circumstances when a quiet shutter is an advantage and when a noisy shutter is a curse. Speaking as a 20D owner (it has a horrendously loud mechanism) I can appreciate the OP's point.
 
The D700 does sound like a door being slammed, I'd like to hear (or not hear) the quiet mode, is there any trade off with it? ie is is restricted to certain shutter speeds etc?

Thanks Ryan....(mutter)...didn't really want to spend that much.
Better try and sell more pictures or turn down indoor Dressage gigs...
 
Can I suggest you save yourself a few thousand and get a quiet shutter mode and a pull out LCD and invest in the D5k? ;)

I'm all for saving. Don't know anything about these. I need good high 3200+ ISO usability and highish 6 fps or more frame rate ?

I knew I was missing the point, but thank you for the clarification, hence the :p .. but still, made me smile. If I was to tell my OH I need to change camera, from a D700 to a D3s, purely for sound level, she'd shove a spatular so far up my nose I'd hate to think where they'd pull it out from.

Again, thank you for the clarification; I just hope I haven't offended the OP with my comments :)
 
Well I think you should sell me your D700 for a bargain price :) Deal?! To help pay for your upgrade ;)

I convinced my mate to sell his Canon line-up and buy a D300s with 70-300, 17-35 and 50mm on the strength of the red flash on the grip "looking cool". He's well sold on it.... :)

The OP is looking for a pro camera, and while the D5000 is a nice camera, it hardly cuts it on the pro range.

They have no stock only a lie that they print on their pages. I know because even though I'm a a store manager of a well known camera retailer I could not get one through work and we don't get staff discount worth a bean on it so tried Amazon telling them if I did not have the camera in 24 hours I would have my money back. They then emailed to say they where waiting for stock and would not give my money back unless the camera was faulty.

I'll wait a few weeks Nikon will flood the UK soon :thumbs:

As for the sound on the D3s... yeah it is quieter than the D700 and as for ISO performance you will be blown away 3200 is a walk in the park for it, cleaner than my 300s at LOW! :bonk:
 
it was tongue in cheek really! :P D5k is quite noisy at 6,400 ISO and top speed it 4 fps ;)

Maybe I'm missing something here, but doesn't the D3 and the D700 use the same shutter mechanism :thinking:

The 'furniture' surrounding it will have as much an impact on the sound it makes as the shutter itself.

As an Amazon Prime user I have NEVER EVER known an item showing as "in stock" to not arrive next day. I'm sorry but I think you're wrong. You may not be able to get a D3s but I'm certain that if Amazon say it's in stock for next day delivery then it is.

Apologies Trevor for taking this OT but as Rob has indicated he wants one I thought he might like to know that there's a retailer out there who has them. I can only assume 18-270 (as the "store manager of a well known camera retailer") would rather we didn't buy elsewhere.........
 
Slightly off camber here, but I thought it worth mentioning, if you're a left eye shooter, (if not please ignore me) :)

If you use single point focus, moving the focus point around with the selector, is a pain on the D3s compared to my gripped D700. (I've stuck my thumb in my right eye on more than one occasion!) Especially noticeable when using 85mm 1.4 wide open, and focus is critical. I now don't use that lens on the D3s, because of it.

Those pictures are very impressive. I was using my 20D at f1.4 and ISO 3200 last night and after noise reduction and a boost to contrast and saturation I was left somewhat disappointed with something like a one in three keep rate...

but after looking at those shots my keep rate has now dropped to zero. You swine. :|

Easy tiger no need to make assumptions on my behalf I'm not a seller nor have I ever said buy something from Jessops... in fact did I not say I couldn't get one? :shrug:

As for Amazon they now claim order in the next 18 hours and you'll have it by the 15th... Or am I wrong again? :thinking:

Is there anything you can do to quieten a shutter down?

Sometimes my d700 does get on my wick. Looking at it, you'd kinda think it just needs a damping material at the top where the mirror rests when it's up.

I'd almost expect someone to make a kit consisting of an adhesive soft strip you can put there to absorb some of the clank.

Went down to Park Cameras with bigsmiff yesterday. Their demo D700 seemed much quieter than mine (didn't take mine...D'oh !)..will pop into Nikon in Kingston today to hopefully get their opinion. I'll keep you updated.
 
Just back from Nikon.
One of the service guys had a listen to my camera, took it into the workshop, when he returned he informed me that after listening to it and comparing to another D700 mine was no more noisy.
Relieved to hear that there is nothing wrong with it, now gotta decide whether it's worth the outlay for me to change for a D3 (s), or not shoot any more indoor Dressage.
I've had complaints about how loud my D700 is from the riders !!
