D700 dynamic focus

I was recently playing around with dynamic focus on my D700 and any interesting menu settings as I normally just use single focus. The next day though my dynamic focus is less than dynamic. In fact, it acts just like single focus.

I've gone through the menus several times wondering what I've turned off but can't figure it out. I wonder if any bright person has got any idea of what stupid thing I've done.

Thanks!

Have you set the focus mode selector (next to fx badge on front) to single?

Oh and welcome:)

Hi Braidy,

Here's something for you to try.

Select Continuous servo on the front of the camera, and select the Dynamic AF on the rear of the camera.

Goto the custom setting menu>Autofocus>Dynamic AF Area, and select 51 points (3D-tracking).

Now point your camera at something, and focus. Keeping AF on, move the camera around, and you'll see the focus point follow the subject you focused on.

Obviously, it has it's limitations, which are explained in the manual, but it's a pretty nifty system.

You can select different Dynamic AF Area settings, dependent on the way your subject will be moving. Again, that's all explained in the manual.

I'd suggest putting that Dynamic AF Area menu into your 'my Menu', for easy access, or I think it can also be assigned to a Fn button.

Let me know if that works for you.

Cheers
Oliver

EDIT: You can also adjust the responsiveness of 3D Tracking with the menu option 'Focus tracking with lock-on'. Selecting 'Short' or 'Off', will increase responsiveness.

Unfortunately the focus point doesn't follow the subject focused on. I wonder if it's just faulty?

Hmmm... I've no doubt you've followed my suggestion, but are you SURE you've done everything correctly??

I'll keep my thinking cap on ;)

Hi Oli - if you're still there - can I ask why the dynamic focus point doesn't move when it's set to 9 or 21 points? I take pictures of theatre productions and the ability for the camera to 'follow' an actor around would be great (I'm wondering if 51 focus points is going to be too slow for my needs).

If there are any other people with experience of this type of photography I'd be grateful to know what they find are the best settings.

Hi Braidy. Still here..

I did mean to explain this actually. As far as I know, it does work in the same manner as 51 Area, but it doesn't do the thing in the viewfinder where it follows the subject. Remember about all the other settings though, as they will influence how it works. Maybe setting 'Focus tracking with lock-on' to 'Long' would be more appropriate for your needs. I guess you'll just have to experiment.

Let me know if you suss it out, and yeah, it would be good to hear from anyone else if they've got this system worked out.

:D

hi, I do alot of theatre photography - I use 51pt 3d tracking all the time - magic! You can see the focus point moving in 51pt 3D.

Make sure you're set to 'C' continuous and use Dynamic area AF - centre position in the AF Area Mode selector on the back of the camera.

he's a professional actor originally from Manchester - now living in Edinburgh. I also do a lot of production pictures for professional theatre companies.
