I had the first proper day shooting with the D700 on Sunday. I have obviously been mucking about with it at home, reading the books and I took it to the beach one day with the kids and dogs but it's not quite the same as a full on days shooting.
So Sunday saw me with the lovely Trevor and Faye Yerbury and three fellow delegates (Waves hello, it's amazing where you meet fellow TP'ers
) We did have a great day shooting the amazing Becky and between window light, just the modelling lamps in the studio, one softbox and a fresnel the lighting was fairly simple but required a fair bit of shifting about on camera.
As more experienced Nikonians have reported I've found the metering to be about 1/3 stop over so I'm going to keep an eye on that one. I'm hoping to be shooting again this weekend and if I'm still getting 1/3 stop on both cameras I'll dial them both down. Coming from an underexposing Canon it's a little bit funny to have them going the other way even if only slightly.
The hardest part of the day was going from shooting under the modelling lamps (tungsten) ISO 3200 f2.8 1/60 to plugging in a synch lead and bingo, WB changes to flash, ISO to 200, f8 and 1/100sec so back and forward went the settings. Only a couple of the shots under the modelling lamp using the fresnel were a little soft due to some subject movement which is entirely my fault.
Other than that I have to say that I was really pleased with it first day out. Loved the little 50mm f1.4 and although I shot all the studio stuff on the 24-70 f2.8 for the extra reach. (Trevor was shooting on an 85mm so the shots were set up for that longer focal length) I would certainly shoot with the 50mm with no qualms at all. It's a little star
Couple of pics from the day on my blog as they may be NSFW
