D700 format confusion

Can anyone confirm that the D700 can be switched from Full Frame to Crop. Does this mean that if fitted with the 24-70 2.8 and switched to crop the reach becomes 36-105. Or does it have to be fitted with dedicated DX lenses. Hope I've made myself clear.

Your reach with the 24-70 will not increase, you will just reduce your field of view and effective megapixels down to 5MP I think.

Don't know where you find the option to switch to DX mode as I've never used it but I do know that it auto-senses DX lenses.

Don't know where you find the option to switch to DX mode ...

It's: Shooting Menu/Image Area/Choose Image Area... but, as Tim says, all it does is crop the image. You may as well keep the full frame and crop in PP.

it'd have the same effect as cropping, the effective reach arguement is that if you had the same lens on the d300/d700 on the d300 you'd be "closer" because the image would be spread across 12 mp whereas on the d700 it'll be across 5.5mp rather than the full 12 mp the camera offers

Thanks for speedy replies. Looks like the person I spoke to at Park Cameras needs to check their facts.
I was under the impression that I would be able to switch and effectively have Full Frame and Crop in one body.
Back to the drawing board, maybe I'll stick with what I've got.

Drawn towards the D700 after rave reviews on here. Means unloading all my Canon gear though.
I know Ali has just done it. Much head scratching methinks.

you can have full frame and crop in one body but the ff is 12mp and crop is 5.5mp :)

Very much depends on what you shoot Trevor. I was using 2 full frame Canons and nothing on a crop so I don't miss not having the extra reach. :)

I shoot equine events. I use the 7D with 24-105 outdoors and fit the 50mm 1.4 when working in indoor arenas. It's the light that forces use of the 50mm often at ISO 6400. FOV on the crop is perfect at these lengths. I considered the 24-70 2.8. In fact I'd love it.
I use a 5D classic for everything else.
I also have a couple of family weddings to shoot this year. 1 in a Church the other in a hotel. This is why I'm looking into better low light performance. In truth the indoor equine events aren't driving this, it's the weddings.
Budget is going to be limited. I figure that by unloading my Canon gear I might be able to manage 1 D700 and a 24-70 2.8. Perhaps keep the 5D with 50mm as breakdown back up.

If you want to do the full-frame/crop trick, something like the Canon 5D2 will get you 21mp FF down to 8mp on 1.6x crop, which is not far off having a 5D2 and a 40D in one body, at least in IQ terms. That is the swap I'm about to make.

If that kind of compromise appeals, the Canon 1D4 with 16mp in a 1.3x pro-spec body has a heck of a lot going for it.

What happens to the viewfinder on a D700 when you switch to DX?

the d3 shades out the area that isn't covered but i'm not sure if the d700 does?

No it doesn't, it puts a bold line around the edge of your new frame.

Trevor, what you get with a crop body (say the D300) over a full frame body (D700) is higher pixel density - the same number of pixels (12mp) but in a smaller area.

5D 2. Sadly just doesn't have the required frame rate for Show Jumping
That's why I'm considering the Nikon as a one size fits all. I appreciate I can always crop from FF. The advantage in not having to do this is simply marketing. At events I sell and print on site. Customers get to preview imported images direct from camera. I want to
make the image visually appealing without PP. That means having the subject matter filling the frame, horse and rider. I know that I could probably shoot FF with D700 with 70-200 2.8. That would mean I'd probably not be able to afford the 24-70 2.8.
Decsions.....
Yes I'm lusting over the Nikon for high ISO performance
If someone could shoot somthing at ISO 6400 at DX size on their D700 and post the result with a link to large image I'd be very gratefull

If I had a DX lens I'd do it for you in a heartbeat but I bought all FF.

You don't need a DX lens, Ali, just use a FF lens and set the camera to DX crop in the shooting menu :)

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. If you could Ali I'd be very grateful !

If it's frame rate, and considering the total cost of switching, 1D4 seems like an option. Or 1Ds3.

On the other hand, if what you really want is a Nikon... ;)

I used to be indecisive, now......I'm not so sure.....;)

Weddings are a brilliant excuse for all sorts of irrational and excessive spending. Make sure you get your share :D

Thanks so much, really helpful, I printed it at 10x8. this quality would be perfectly acceptable for selling on the day at the events I shoot at.

Glad it was ok, if you need anything shot rather than a lamp, give me a shout. i also had to reduce this to get it to download on here and flickr , if you PM me your email i can send the original or another of a different subject if it helps
