Hi All,

I am currently using D700 with 24-70m 2.8 Nikon lens and noticed that my images are blurred on various shots - I have always used a UV filter and recently attached a ND4 filter on top and since placing the two filters together noticed massive blur in the images? any suggestions?

furthermore, Can you use a ND4 filter when talking shots of people moving fast out side (typically guests dancing) - does anyone else use ND4 filters with UV and notice this problem?

I have changed the settings to now capture when image is in focus and currently using 51points 3D

Stacking filters is bound to destroy the quality of your images. Have you tried the lens with no filters on at all to see if its sharp?
 
With an ND4 attached are you keeping an eye on shutter speed?

If you're going for motion blur, fine, but when not going for motion blur gotta keep an eye on speed. Sorry if teaching you to suck eggs.
 
If the images were fine with UV filter and only degraded when adding ND filter the ND filter may be causing the issue. No point in having both on there together anyway so what happens when you just use the ND (which rules out one potential issue)?
 
Lens need testing with NO filters. Thats £1200 of glass, with a few quids worth stuck on the front, so check without either first, then if they are ok, check with each filter individually. Finally, having two filters stacked will nearly always degrade IQ to some extent, so if using the ND, remove UV first. Personally I don't feel the need to use a UV at all, the hood protects the lens well enough and I know IQ is as it should be, but thats a personal choice, some people swear by filters, some like me will only use them for a specific purpose when needed, eg, an ND

edit: oh yes, and as woof woof says, check shutter speeds, thats a fair weight of lit to hand hold, if speeds too low, you are going to get blur
 
Why are you using an Nd 4 at all? Do you know what they do?

I can't see why you'd want an nd4 to take photos of people, unless you purposely want them to be blurred, in which case the original question is some what moot.
 
Before shooting with an ND filter it's always advised to focus first, then swicth to manual focus and add the filter. At least for stills. I would imagine it's same for video, you use manual focus. As the camera can get all confused with the filter attached.

I see no sense in having both filters on. UV filters in general are useless. The ONLY reason to have one these days , with lens elements being to good with anti-glare etc ... would be to keep the front element spotless.

I use an ND4 for taking pics of people. :D
