D700 - Last of the best ?

Fair enough. I don't pounce on new tech either. I was lucky enough to get a long term loan of a D800 and a D800E to establish whether it was the right camera for me. However.. oil spots are really no biggy. Like any dirt on the sensor, you just clean it with an appropriate cleaning kit. It's routine maintenance anyway. Sooner or later, you'll have to clean your sensor.

The D800 is utterly superb and has blew me away, I said this earlier but it's exactly what I wanted my D700 to be after using the 5D mk2 for awhile.

Well now I can be totally confident that the D800 is exactly what I am looking for !
I love the build quality, the sensor resolution, the focus system, the weather sealing, and everything else. It was the file size that was putting me off a bit.
Thanks to Dave, no more though.
To be fair, I would think a lot of people are of the same mind.
ie don't want the D600, but are put off by the file size of the D800.

Oh, and definitely no spots of any sort on Dave's sensor !

That's because I clean it :)

I've never noticed oil spots though. Just the usual dust and crap that accumulates when you change lenses a lot. It's no worse than any other camera I've had.

I also find the grip better, it seems more recessed and sits in my hand much more comfortably
