No
working outdoors today . and must have changed something as ive started getting shutter lag 2/3 seconds.

someone out there will know.

Have you turned the left hand wheel on top to timer by accident.

No real experience of the D700 but on the D90 there is a menu setting to raise the mirror 1s before the shutter opens to eliminate camera shake. Does the 700 have something similar that you maybe set by accident?

unless I have missed a setting, the shutter has to be pressed twice on the D700 when in mirror up mode, though you may be able to just set a 'time' for it, just not seen it. However, would expect the OP to mention a double 'noise' for that too

There is a 'shutter delay' option in one of the menus on the D3 I think, could be similar on the D700.

sorted guys I had somehow turned on the redeye reduction and the assist light comes on for a second before the shutter fires .

thanks for all suggestions.

had to use the d3s in the cold poor little thing LOL

Custom setting menu (pencil) > d Shooting/display > d8 Exposure delay mode > on/off.
Says it "reduces the effects of vibration caused by raising the mirror" but I think it's just for when you want your £3k camera to work like a point n shoot compact.
Say's the shutter will fire approx a second after mirror raises and having just tried it you get two clicks, one right as you hit the shutter release for the mirror popping up then the shutter going. If you are only getting one click which is delayed from the shutter release being pressed then must be something else.

Ah well, nevermind then, glad you got it sorted.
Wouldn't the D3s handle the cold better anyway?
