D700 shutter stuck on x250

Title says it all really. Switched on the camera this morning to find shutter stuck on x250 in both M and S modes. I can access higher shutter speeds in A mode so am at a loss as to what is going on. I have consulted manuals and forums which all say this is flash sync speed but do not say how to switch it off. I have tried the reset options but to no avail.

Any help would be super lovely

Is your pop up flash capable of wireless triggering a speedlight? Sounds like your camera thinks the pop up flash is up? :)
 
It does look like it's stuck in flash sync speed for some reason. Have you tried releasing the flash a few times in case it didn't trip one of the micro switches when it was last stowed. Have a good look at your hotshoe to make sure there's nothing in it that would stop it closing properly and give it a good blow out. If not then I think it's maybe a trip to Nikon for a check. I'm sure someone else will be on soon who can help you further, as you've probably checked the hotshoe already, but I shoot Canon and I'm not familiar with your model. Good luck on getting it fixed.
 
Got to be worth trying a reset on the camera aswell. More than likely instructions in your manual :)
 
Does the rear wheel do anything at all? For example, if you hold down the flash mode button can you adjust the flash settings with the rear wheel?

Huge thanks for all the tips; I have been helped.

It was the camera having a hissy fit about the flash and all seems to have settled down now.

Still, it probably is about time I put it in for a service.

Just adding to this old thread as I experienced this with one of my D3S bodies and found a different simple solution on photo.net:-
With the command dial in the position where it shows x250, simply turn the dial in the opposite direction ... back through the slow shutter speeds and keep turning until you go through high speeds - switch off/on and problem gone.
Don't know what caused it but that simple fix resolved it and appears to work with a number of different Nikon bodies.
