I would pick up a 2nd hand D200 or D300. The D300 will use the same grip etc as the D700. Either of these and the D700 will use the AF 50mm f1.8D which is an absolute corker for about £100. The 70-300 is OK but it depends on what you are after, might be worth trying it first.
I use the 70-300 VR on my D700 and it is a bang for buck lens in my opinion, it performs alot better on the D700 than when it was on the crop sensors before upgrade.
Had it for years since I started with D50, it is the one lens that has never been chopped.
Will be in the bag for sometime to come as well...
Mmmmm...I was going to wait to get a D700. But I made the mistake of trying one, 7days later I had one. Standard zoom (28-70 2.8) it was love. Both bought used. Couldn't be happier. Since added 70-200 VR and more. Now run out of cash, do I care...!
So get the d700 then and then it all points to sticking with the Nikon f2.8s. This will really stretch the finances any short cuts - older Nikon, Tamron?
You could put the Siggy 24-70 2.8 on it. Saves quite a bit of cash. My Nikkor 28-70 2.8 used at £695. Probably find the Siggy at around 300-400. Can't advise on IQ though.
Most of my lenses are Sigma that I use on the D700 I have a 17-35 ƒ2.8 and 28-70 ƒ2.8, then a 70-200 ƒ2.8.
For the money I think they are cracking lenses, I could not afford the nikon versions so I use these and I am chuffed with them, apart from the 70-200 which was purchased new the other two lenses were purchased second hand at LCE in the strand.
I always keep my eye on the used shelf in that shop. Last lens I got there was a Nikon 85 ƒ1.8 which was less than year old and on £240.
