D700 to D600 - would you change?

This is more of a hypothetical question at the moment, brought about by a conversation in work, although it has been something I've contemplated.

Video appeals, as does the rather lovely sensor, but is the body/af too much of a downgrade?

Id be interested to hear peoples opinions, especially from anyone who's made the swap.
 
Doubt it. And for what, 24MP. That would be the only thing that may tempt me.

But nothing else about the D600.And not least, my MB-D10 will not fit So what do I do with my EN-EL4a batteries and MH-21 charger. That little lot was quite an investment.

What else from Nikon is going to give me 8FPs (when I need it), great Hi ISO performance and FF. And yes, I'd love a D4 as well ( may even be prepared to slum it with a D3s, at least I could use my batteries!)

love my D700. The only thing in the Nikon range I'd change it for is a D3s ( are they stlll in the range?)

A D600.No thanks. Leave that for those that think it's an upgrade from the D7000

No chance, unless it got nicked and the only option on insurance was a D600. 12mp is more than enough for me, and my compact does perfectly adequate video if I ever need to use it. If pushed I'd consider a D800, or wait a bit and see what comes next - I've had the D700 four and a half years now so I don't change bodies very often.

Video is why I've opted for the D600 over a used D700. It's a massive part of what I do so I can live with the smaller firm factor, lower FPS and slightly lesser build quality.

That's what I thought. Wasn't meant to be condescending.

But if I had d7000 and wanted a FF upgrade that's what I'd be after. Maybe I'm a bit ****ed Nikon haven't produced an upgrade path for me yet. I just don't need 36mp with all that brings.......
 
I rarely print, 12mp is fine for me and I'll likely keep the D700 until it dies, I'll probably add a D800 or equivalent whenever funds allow.

I'll never shoot video. I have a MB-D10. The D700 doesn't seem to limit me - I'm better off spending money on new glass.

How do you find the video on it? That's one thing that's really attractive to me. Im gonna have to have a play with one in a shop and see what is like in the the hand.
 
Not been in the least bit bothered by video, I cannot see any other reason to change for the sort of photography that I do. I have a D7000 that now rarely gets used and the d700 does everything better, I'll carry on spending my money putting together a better selection of lenses
 
I was considering a D600 to run alongside the D700 but decided that there simply wasn't enough to make it an upgrade, more of a sidestep! Maybe if I had wanted video but I don't! (I've used video on a couple of compacts but purely as snapshot type recordings).

The D800 IS an upgrade though which is why I did weaken and bought one. If I need a higher frame rate than the D800 allows, I'll use the D700 and not crop!
 
D600 feels like a piece of plastic crap compared to the D700, i bought one, tried it, returned it and went back to the D700, D600 Yuk.

This is very true.

I was out and about in Belfast this afternoon and called into Jessops. I had my camera with me as I was wanting to try out a few bags. One of the guys in Jessops came over and asked me why I was looking at a D600 when I had a real camera. :D

To be fair I had a bit of a play with the D600 for a good while (the wife was busy hunting for new bed linen or some such nonsense for ages across the road) the I.Q is superb, I couldn't personally live with the a.f system and would rather have the build of the D700/D800. I also really didn't like the layout of the buttons but I guess you would get used to it with time.

At least I am 100% sure now that a D800/D800e will definitely be my next camera. I was kind of hoping the D600 would win me over once I got to have a play with one considering the price difference, especially for what I can buy a D600 for with the old staff discount.

On a side note by the way for the rest of the Northern Ireland people on here, Jessops in the town centre was great, really friendly staff and spent a lot of time with me even though they knew I would not be making a large purchase today.

I've owned both of them. The D700 is far and away the better stills camera.

Honestly Greg, dont sell the D700 until youve tried the D600 as within 5 minutes of having the D600 in your hands you'll be regretting it.

Oh definitely not! As I said it's more a hypothetical thing, but I still want to have a play with one.

I do have a gut feeling that I probably couldn't get on with the build and controls though, I've used work's D90 on occasion and I really didn't like it.

Anyhoo, it's not that the D700 is letting me down in any way, it's the greatest camera I've ever owned!
 
I'm using a D5000?
I fancy a FF upgrade and the appropriate lens to go.

I use a 10-20mm like the wide angle, I've heard great things about the 24 to 70 but its probably too tight, maybe a 16-35.

I tend to do landscapes, AF isn't a biggie for me as I tend to focus to infinity anyway manually on the lens and shoot around F16.

Is a D600 still not more than sufficient?
 
I have both.

Personally I don't have an issue with the build quality at all. If you think the D600 is 'plastic crap' then you must by extension think the D7k is as well. Just elitist *******s really.

That said, I prefer the D700 body and the controls but the D600 I think has an ever so slight edge on IQ. I've gotten used to the more centre based focus points now and it's not an issue. I used to have AF issues with the D600 but must admit I haven't noticed it recently.

The most frustrating thing about my D600 really is the dust/oil issue.

The acid test for me is which camera do I reach for the most. And for me that is the D600. For personal use it's slightly lighter which is good. For weddings the shutter is more dampened, it has quiet mode, 24MP gives me more latitude if I want to crop and better IQ at high ISO.

The D700 is still amazing for it's age but I have grown really conscious of the clackiness. Oh and there's a lot to be said about getting a new camera with 2 year warranty.
 
Personally if I was buying now I wouldn't hesitate to buy a D600. The *******s some people talk on this forum baffles me. Double res sensor, video, better low light etc. I was more than happy with my old D7000. Too many people are more concerned about how their camera looks rather than the actual photograph. Read any reasonable working pros review, Ryan brenizer for example and they will say the same thing I.e. IT IS A BETTER CAMERA THAN THE D700.

The **** that is spurt on this forum is unreal to be honest.

From the same guy who said he would never buy a D600 because he would be too embarrassed to pull it out at a wedding.

That was a **** take. Ive used lesser cameras at weddings. It's a shame there's no block button on this forum as you'd be the first on my list

No, would not change.

While the 24mp would be nice, everything else is a step back from the D700 - Build quality, size, AF, FPS... D800 is the upgrade from the D700
 
At the moment i am very happy with my D700,not being tempted by the D600 still hoping for an baby D4 which i very much doubt going to happen,but even then ? the D700 does everything i want of it :)

I doubt very much that we'll ever see a baby D4. I think Nikon realise that it would seriously damage the sales of the D4 (as the D700 did with the D3). I think the specs of the 5Dmkiii were much closer to what I was expecting the D700's successor to be like.

Whilst I agree that the D800 is definitely better than the D600, don't forget that the D700 doesn't do video, it's noisy and nor does it have dual card slots.

The latter gives me a lot of peace of mind on weddings. I shoot RAW's to one, JPG to the other as a fallback. I used to shoot RAW's to both but stopped that as I was using too many SD cards.

Video not an issue for me, nor noise, although extra slot would be nice. Would still take a d700 over a d600.
