D700 Viewfinder problem "UPDATE"

These symptoms can only mean one thing - power supply link to overlay LCD (in a viewfinder) has failed. It is described in Nikon service manuals for pretty much all their DSLRs. When that LCD overlay receives no power the screen goes very dark (like with the lens stopped down) and none of the indicator works. Coclusion - it is definitely in need of a service, I'm afraid :(. Hopefully it won't be anything drastic - just a simple repair.

Posts 26 & 29.

My guess is the overlay is getting some power but not enough - that might explain why the AF Area Bracket is showing but the AF points are in reverse (pic in post 32).

Yes only option left, so sending back to Nikon early next week, see what they have to say and are going to charge, thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, i will update it when i hear back from Nikon :)
 
Hi let us know how it goes,how far out of g/tee is it ?.

Their was a ruleing in the courts a little while back,when someone took a manfacture to court over the 1year g/tee.

The judge ruled because of the price of the goods,you should be able to expect it to last longer than an year,his ruleing was up to 5years,and plaintiff won his case.

Purchased around Sept 2009, i thought it was in warranty, but that's my other D700, i agree with what your saying, i believe their is a thing called "fit for purpose" and it has been challenged in court a few times, with a good outcome for the buyer, i will see what Nikon quote when they receive the camera, you never know, they might repair it as a good will gesture, if theirs not to much involved, i can live in hope, lol :)
 
Just a quick update on this, Nikon are asking for £326 for the repair on my D700, that covers replacement parts, plus some cleaning etc, i'm not a happy bunny at the moment, and i'm trying to haggle with them, after explaining, although out of warranty, it has just under 9000 actuation's on it, which is nothing for a camera of this calibre as far as i'm concerned, i'm waiting for them to come back to me, i will update again, when they do.
 
they should fix it as a goodwill gesture.

did they id what was causing the problem?
 
Who are you dealing with at Nikon?

I have the customer service managers email if you need it. He sorted out my d700 and 16-35 for free out of warranty, although it did take some persuasion.

Thats what i'm hoping for, they mentioned a couple of parts in the breakdown of the repair list, but nothing specific.
