d700 with grip - stops working when battery in grip is dead..

hi all, had a scary moment today when out shooting. My d700 stopped firing and just gave an 'err' message. The shutter sort of seemed to open but then locked in place and refused to work. After a bit of trial and error i realised that it wasn't working when the grip was attached and that the battery in the grip had in fact completely run out.

Now, as much as i'm relieved that this is the problem and not a dead shutter - i'm a bit annoyed that when the grip battery dies, it won't just use the in camera battery and carry on as normal. Is this just the way it is or am i missing something? It's a third party mieke grip by the way. Thanks!

That's strange, I have the nikon MBD-10 grip on mine, even if I don't have a battery in the grip at all and it's just using the battery in the camera body the camera still works, even the buttons on the grip itself still works. Perhaps it's something to do with it being a 3rd battery grip?

Have you looked into your custom menus about batter order preferences etc?

menu d11, when the battery dies if the one in the camera is good you need to turn the d700 off and back on and it will switch over to the one in the body, personally i only use a battery inthe grip.
