D700 zoom advice?

Bit of a newbie seeking advice again (you've not let me down so far!) - okay I have a D700 and saved recently for a 55-300 which I'm liking! Any advice if I want to save my pennies for a zoom with even greater range but which I might manage to save for within my lifetime?!

Do you mean D7000, cos the 55-300 is a DX lens and not best suited to a D700.

You were kind enough to answer a similar question previously for me (I've just re-read: should've done so before getting the lens!!) so hoping I'll get some good advice re a good choice to zoom on my D700 (I know I dont even deserve a 7000 when I know so little, but I'm learning - mostly thanks to you guys!!)
 
When you start to go over 300mm, things start to get costly, especially if you want to stay with Nikon. The 80-400 is the lowest priced telephoto, but after that things start getting silly. Alternatively, try Sigma. I've recently bought the 50-500 OS which is a stabilised version of the regular 50-500. The Sigma 150-500 is also popular. Tokina and Tamron also do longer lenses, but I don't know of anyone who uses them so don't know how good they are.

Have a look on here for Nikon prices, and here for Sigma prices. These are all new prices, so you could check on ebay, second hand dealers like MPB, or in the forum classifieds when you get access.
 
Agreed, it will have to be a sigma for anything over 300mm
Lots to choose from, I highly recommend the 120-400 OS. The copy I owned was fantastically sharp all the way upto 400mm. Still annoyed I sold it.

If you want a lens that is designed for the d700 and other fx cameras but still has a similar zoom to what you have now, look at the 70-300VR. If you sold the current one, you shouldn't have to spend too much more on a used 70-300.

... thanks guys - all of this will be a huge help and yes, vignetting like mad but I thought it was because I'm so rubbish!! ... think I'll pack it in its box to sell and get saving! 
