D7000 AF assist and flash

I had a few auto problems last night whilst using my D7000 and YH565EX in a darkened dancehall.
Most of the time the camera autofocused but there where occasions when it wouldn't. The YN565 has the AF assist set to on so a red grid is projected onto the subject.
I notice that when a flash is mounted on the D7000 the cameras AF assist light doesn't function is this normal? Even if the AF assist is switched off on the flash.

AF set to AF-S. Centre spot selected. Manual camera mode.

Not sure I follow, were you using manual focus?

No, the OP said AF-s. I guess by manual they mean manual exposure.

Oops, yep - not enough coffee yet.

And to answer the OP's question, yes flashes will turn the AF assist lamp off - at least the Nikon speedlights do, I'd expect the same behaviour for 3rd party guns too. Personally I can't stand the thing (the af assist lamp) so always have it switched off.
