The tighter you keep the focus area, the faster the focus will react.
Is the D7000 like the d3 and have a 51 area autofocus? For faster response time, cut it down to 9 areas, it will use whichever area you highlight, plus the surrounding 8 in a cross formation. For something fairly predictable like motor racing (you know where they are going, they follow the long black line!) you do not need many focus areas in use at any one time, you can keep the subject pretty much in the firing line easily. For something like a bird in flight where you don't know where it is oing, use the 51 areas, but it does slow the focus response time fairly noticeably, simply because the computer is having more calculations to do.
Use continuos autofocus mode, not single servo.
Restrict the number of focus areas.
Set the motor drive to the fastest setting.
Set the shutter release to release mode, not focus mode (shutter goes when you press it, not Just when the image is sharp)
That's about it really.
