D7000 firmware

I've not had my d7000 all that long. So today I thought I'd look to see what firmware it was running. When I checked there were 3 different categories; (a), (b) and (L). Each category had its own specific number next to it. Can someone please explain what these mean, and how do I know if I'm running the latest firmware before installing anything else? Thanks

The camera firmware is split into two parts, A & B. Not sure why - probably due to the layout of the hardware within the camera. Firmware L contains lens distortion control data. Pretty sure current versions are A:1.02, B:1.03 and L:1.006

Google 'Nikon firmware update' and you'll quickly find what you need.

When new firmware is available, read the blurb and see if you need to update it, you may not need what the update offers. Can be worth downloading to your computer (along with a copy of any instalation instructions) in case you decide you do want to update it at a later date.
