D7000 Focus Question

Wondering if someone could help out, i took a few photos yesterday which i am happy with, i installed View NX2 for the first time and opened up one of the images i took yesterday, turned on the "Show Focus Point" and found the square box is half in focus and half out of focus, is my camera back or front focusing?

Two possibilities here, either the camera is back focusing by a small amount, or it could be that the camera has made a "best guess" and called it a day as even within the focusing area not everything is in focus. Also bear in mind that the actual focus sensors often don't line up directly where the viewfinder markings are, or where the software thinks they are, so you could have a slight upwards offset here.

To be honest close up work with wide apertures is where you'll really notice even the slightest front or back focus tendencies. Pretty much all the cameras I've used start to show oddities like this when only a small part of the area under focus sensor will be in focus. You're often better off using your eyes and focusing manually for this kind of work.

If it's doing it consistently you might want to take a look at the AF fine tune. I did and it improved my fast lenses considerably.

Hi Daniel

Its your lens not your camera which is back focussing, you should have an option in the menu system to micro adjust for each different lens you use and then save these settings, then each time you mount your lenses the camera recognises which lens and makes the adjustment automatically.

thanks guys, this is zoomed to 100% so the margin of error is very small and im not overly bothered but i do use this lens for close up portraiture where i normally focus on the eye, just a bit concerned it would miss the eye, i'll have a play with the af fine tune later
