D7000 - Prime Lens Options

Hi guys, I'm currently in the market for a new camera and the D7000 has made it onto the shortlist. It looks like a great camera.

I prefer to shoot primes and that's where I'm a bit concerned. I would like to to be able to shoot at some of the traditional prime focal lengths; 35mm, 50mm and 85mm (as well as something a little longer on occassion).

What are you guys shooting on crops and what primes could you recomend?

I know some of the cheaper f1.8 Nikkor primes have some issues with corner sharpness but I'm assuming this wouldn't be an issue on a DX format camera?

(I shoot mainly portrait and general street in natural light. I'm a big fan of shallow DOF.)

I'm not sure I follow your concern as you seem to be suggesting that Nikon doesn't have these focal lengths which it clearly does.

On a DX camera corner edge to edge sharpness will be less obvious but if I was shooting primes I'd buy the fastest available (oh yeah- I did:lol:). Focal length is an entirely personal thing for what you're after- what suits my style may not suit yours and vice versa. Presumably you have an idea of the focal lengths you most commonly use so just buy the corresponding primes.
Having said that, photographers should accept that they will buy lenses that they may not use as they learn what works for them e.g. people always recommend 50mm or 35mm lenses without knowing any detail- perfectly reasonable recommendation but if you never shoot that length it seems a bit wasteful to buy one.

I wouldn't rule out the 70-200- great for flexible street photography and even elitists will admit it's sharp.

Hi gingerweasel,

The 50mm f1.8D is brilliant for the money, and near matches the f1.4 from f1.8 onwards. On the too rare occasions I use it, I'm always pleased with the IQ. Awkward focal length on a crop body though.

I also have the 24mm f2.8 and the 35mm f2D. Luke warm about those two. I hear the 35mm f1.8G is much better.
 
Most of my photography is of my children as they are both very young so I don't have much spare time for anything else!

50mm F1.4 works really well for me on my D7000 as a prime portrait lens...I take a lot of pics of my kids with it.

70-200 is great when we're out and about.

I'd really like an 85mm F1.4 but who wouldn't!
 
Guys, thank you for taking the time to respond.

In my usual fashion I decided to go in a completely different direct at the last minute so no D7000 on the cards.
