Hi all

I just got a D7000 this morning and looking through the menus I have the choice of 4 different Raw files.
Any advice on which to use? The options are 12 bit, 14 bit compressed or uncompressed.

On an 8Gb card I get either 230 14bit uncompressed or upto 420 12bit compressed. Is it as different as jpg fine/basic?

I've always subscribed to the theory that you should record your images at the best quality, least loss available. If you find yourself in a position when the available card space dictates otherwise then you need to consider options... Otherwise why compromise. Larger cards like your 8 or 16Gb cards are so much cheaper these days that additional cards is not restrictive now. :shrug:

The differences are no were near as big as between say fine or basic jpeg. You will not notice hardly any difference at all but on shot that need more pp 14bit uncompressed will be your best option as you can pull more detail back.
 
I'm told it's almost impossible to tell the difference unless you're trying to 'push' the shadows etc in PP. Then the 14-bit files offer a little more latitude.

If storage isn't an issue I'd go with 14-bit uncompressed for this reason.
 
Apologies for dragging up an old thread but I'm trying to find out if it's possible to get uncompressed RAW files out of a D7000.

My D7000 gives the option of Compressed or Lossless Compressed but posts from various other sites (including the OP here) suggest they have an Uncompressed option. :shrug:

The reason I need an uncompressed RAW is to use a specific piece of software. Alternatively can NX2 save compressed RAWs to uncompressed?
 
To Spuff; I've just looked through the manual, and there does not appear to be any uncompressed RAW option.

To Mark (OP), go for 14 bit lossless compressed.
Seems to me that since we spend large amounts of cash on our cameras trying to get the absolutely best image quality, it seems daft not to save in a format which will save all the quality. You never know when you are going to get 'the shot'; and then you will want all the goodness of a high quality save.

Also, as I get better at PP, I sometimes go back to RAWs of years ago and re-process. Memory is cheap.

Thanks - gave it a try but the software couldn't find the "RAW offset". It's for some AF Tuning software - a guy has written some freeware but being a D800 user I'm not sure he realised that the D7000 doesn't have the uncompressed RAW option.

I've tried the dot tune method but with limited success so perhaps will bite the bullet and buy FocusTune.
