D7000 - switch off focus point

Can't find my thread from the other day, so here goes. A kind person came up with some advice about switching to Manual when taking bikers whizzing by. This would help with panning ... Tried it on some runners hurtling down a hill the other night, but I just couldn't stop myself looking at the little square in the middle of the screen (or edge) and using it as a reference point, even though it wasn't being used. I don't suppose that there is a clever way of turning it off? Sorry to be so STUPID!

The image below was one of the few that worked on Tuesday at the time trial.

I've had a look and it doesn't seem to be possible to completely turn off the central indicator. You could put the camera into Single point mode and then move the active focus point away from the centre once you've determined the correct distance and set the camera or lens to M. See pics for what I mean.
