It's that time of year again, time to upgrade my camera. Well, I'll be purchasing it a year to the day that I bought my 500d. Ideally I'd buy an FF camera but I just can't budget it and I'm fairly certain there is bound to be a new FF camera out next year (hopefully?). The reason for buying isn't just down to upgradeitus, I desperately need a second body for some shows and events I've got coming up over the next few months.
So I looked at all the crop sensor cameras that Canon has out.. but none of them really stuck out for me, probably because they're all using the same DIGIC IV processor from almost 3 years ago and IQ wise none of them seem too much of an upgrade to my 500D, besides I had already ruled out the later XXX line as I wanted something more ergonomic. It just seems that the D7000 and it's sexy new sensor has a real edge over the later Canon crops.
I had a look at the Pentax K5 however it's a little more expensive than the D7000 and I'm a bit skeptical of the Pentax line, although I do have some old film lenses which I believe will work on the camera. So my minds set, a D7000.. now I need some lenses, however I haven't really a clue about what's good and what's not.
I've had a quick read round and I think I've already set my sights on the 35mm 1.4G as opposed to Sigma's 30mm 1.4. On my canon I've got a Tokina 11-16mm and Sigma 18-50mm, so I desperately need something longer, and faster - I've been eyeing up the Sigma 85mm 1.4 for a long time now, however I'm skeptical as to how well it will perform on a Nikon body, has anyone had any issues with third party lenses on Nikon?
People seem to suggest they're prone to faults compared to on Canon lenses.. I don't know the story behind that to be honest.
Nikon's 85mm 1.8.. is this a good choice? How well does it perform? I'd need a lens in this range to have really quick autofocus. There's also the 70-200mm line I'd be interested in, however I'd mainly be using the lower end more (70-100) so I don't know how much of that would be overkill. The Nikkor 70-200 is out of budget, however I really like the look of Sigma's new version with OS, again though.. is this whole issue of Sigmas on Nikon bodies true or nay?
TLDR; what lens to buy alongside the 35mm f1.8G, something in the range of 60-150 (If it's a prime it has to be fast both in terms of aperture and autofocus, if it's a zoom then must be f2.8). Budget of no more than £1000, I'm willing to look at second hand lenses as long as they're easily available - I really don't want to have to wait 3 months just for one to show up on the market even if it will be half the price of a new copy.
