D7000 vs D300 high ISO samples

Hi all. I had a very brief play with my friends D7000 today and took along my old D300 to compare. I took a couple of images of the same thing with both cameras at all the major ISO values from 800 upwards.

Nothing too crazy or scientific and I'd like to use the camera for real out in teh field before making full judgement, but thought these may be of some interest to one or two of you. You can check them all out and download full res jpegs here.

If anyone has a good idea where I can put the RAWs for download I'll stick them up too.
 
One thing that puzzles me when comparing the test images is that the D7000 test shots show the countertop as a completely different colour to the "scene" shot, whereas the D300 ones look pretty close to it, yet the "scene" one was taken with the D7000....

I see why you thought that, but it's just because the crop section is from an area that has light on it. When you see the image as a whole you can see the top is darker than it 'appears' in the D7000 crops - which are misleading when you can't see the whole image.

I went back and double checked the files to make sure I hadn't posted the wrong image (it gets very confusing with all these crops, ISO, cameras lol) and everything is correct as is posted. If you want to pixel peep to see it's correct, look at the light reflection on the table near the bowl and from the sink. The Full scene image is from the ISO 200 crop, compare them and you'll see :) (although, I did just notice I spelt examples wrong on that full scene photo :gag: )

Thanks for posting these. While the D7000 is clearly better it looks like most of the improvement reported in the press comes from the in camera processing software and mot the actual hardware.

surely it's the exact same area, or did you more everything (including the sink) between shots?

The shots were taken hand held, so the framing is slightly different between the two cameras. Anything else?! lol ;)


Yes the framing is slightly different, however the colour of the work surface is entirely different.

Obviously the colour is different between the two cameras as, well, they are two different cameras.

Seriously bored now. Ok, take the full scene image in to photoshop, and if you can be bothered to, download the full res jpeg of the D7000 ISO 200 shot from my site (the very same jpeg I made the crop from and then resized for the full scene image), then resize it down to 700 pixels across in photoshop and compare that to the full scene image, you will see that as if by magic, they are the same shot (bar some sharpening). And you can see your original point that you 'thought' the full scene image was from the D300 was wrong. You can even download the D300 ISO 200 jpeg as well and replicate my crops for yourself! You'll see the D300 file is much darker, so D300 darker, D7000 lighter, just like in the crops.

Again, as I said, I get why you thought that but it's just the section that was used to crop from that has tricked the eye. So to clarify, the full scene shot is from the exact same jpeg used for the D7000 ISO 200 crop.

If you download the jpeg and are still convinced for some reason that the colours are totally different between the D7000 full res crop and the full scene as per your original post, well then there must be some kind of colour space issue going on that I can't see - but as the crop is from the full res jpeg that is downloadable, not sure how that can be?

If you can't be bothered to download the jpeg, resize and compare, well, that's up to you but can you puuurleeeeeeease stop trying to prove I've got it wrong when I haven't. Especially when you have all the means available to replicate my crops etc. Pretty please :D
:agree:in the full size image the colour matches the d300 crops not the d7000.

Bored of this now. Repeating what has already been said is pointless.

Download the full res ISO 200 D7000 jpeg and resize it, and also take the same crop out of it and compare in photoshop. The full scene is the exact same jpeg used for the D7000 100% crop. The D7000 image at ISO 200 is lighter than the D300 one (but cropped area makes it look ligher still), you can see this by looking at the full size jpegs - the D300 one is even darker when you see the whole scene.

You can even see from the crop areas, light reflection and framing that it's the D7000 image. It's just the crop and resize that is tricking your eyes.

I've provided all the full res images but nobody seems willing to download them and check, so I'm leaving it there. Those that think you're right but won't do the leg work to see your wrong, fair enough :)

Did you had a chance to compare the Dynamic range and it's deviation. Do you think D300 noise can be corrected with any preset to bring down to D7000 raw features at high ISO's. ?

Uncle Ken already disqualified all D300s after D7000 test results.....!
 
Hello buddy. I only did this one D300 comparison test as I didn't stop long at my friends who owns the camera. But with regards to the noise, no I don't think you get get the high ISO images back down to D7000 level without severe detail loss using Noise Reduction, and in any case, you could also apply NR to the D7000 files and make them better still. The D7000 is a superior camera in all but build (but the build isn't exactly awful either) :)
