Hi all,

I am looking to upgrade my D300 but do not think I want to go Full frame for various reasons. So I am looking at the d7000.

Image Quality + higher ISO performance (i.e the 7000 is more usuable at 1600+) but I am concerned that I am TRULY going to miss the weight and button layout of the D300...

CONTEXT - I primarily at the moment shoot business conferences, events and actors head shots. Will be hopefully 2nd shooting and doing a few this year myself. I borrow a friend's d90 as a backup body.

Any thoughts?
 
The d7000 would make a nice backup for the d300, but don't sell the d300 to finance it. The only reasons you would want the d7000 is if you really really need 4 extra MP, one more stop of useable ISO and a base ISO of 100. Incidently the d300 is no slouch at ISO 1600, and is perfectly useable for the kind of things you're shooting.

IMHO stick with what you've got. There are no amazing benefits with the d7000 over what you already have. Wait until the new models in the pro range are announced before you even think about moving, and under the current unfortunate circumstances you'll probably have a bit of time to save some money for your upgrade.

Its a great camera (the D7000) but the d300 is better (in my opinion). Stick with what you have, its a great camera, the best dx Nikon offer :)
 
Both are great cameras and I prefer the handling of the D300 but if you want the D7000 as a second body then you ve got yourself a great combination
 
I recently chose the D7000 over the D300 when upgrading. I went for it because the AF did as well as the D300's though it doesn't cover quite as much of the frame, and I don't burst shoot as much. I also liked having the smaller body. I was upgrading from a D3100 though - if I already had a D300, I wouldn't have. I don't think there's enough between them to justify a change unless you want a smaller body, and you evidently don't :)
 
I am sure you will find the D7000 a great camera compared to your D300 but what would you be looking to spend to upgrade - maybe 300 notes - I think you would be better off putting this towards lenses.

This is unless you really need the high ISO or video advantages - for anyone with lesser Nikon's (I moved from D40 to D7000) the difference is obviously immense.
 
I've got a D7000 but if I had a d300 there is no way I'd swap. The differences between the two wouldn't even be worth considering imo.
