D7000 with 150-500mm or 7d and 400mm f5.6

I've got a decision to make and keep changing my mind

I was originally just going to update my gear for wildlife and a bit of sport, and that was simple. However, I had a re-think and an upgrading my underwater setup, which brings us my question...

Underwater, the D7000 is the better camera, whilst in my opinion the 7d is better on land due to the (allegedly) superior AF, buffer and better lens choice.

In your opinions, will the D7000 with the sigma provide me with a chance of good bird in flight shots, the way I could probably get them with the 7d / canon 400mm f5.6 combo? Sharpness and AF ability are the keys.

My secondary lens will be a 70-200mm, which again will either be the canon f4 version, or a sigma f2.8 version, but its the big dog that is my main concern

Total budget will be about £2000, not much room to go higher. The only other serious options I can come up with are the nikon 300mm f4 and 1.4x or a second hand sigma 120-300mm OS. I have no problems buying good condition second hand gear.

I was going to come in and suggest the 120-300 OS, its what I went for in the end. Haven't been able to test it in anger yet but been out a couple of times with it and it seems great. You could always get rid of the 70-200 as well.
 
joe - cheers for that, its the option I keep returning to, I've had one in the past and barring the close focus, I always liked it.

Amp34 - As much as I'm getting swayed towards the canon, I've got a couple of days left to make up my mind. How have you found the AF with that combo, and do you have any examples?

if you do go for the nikon the 300 f4 and 1.4tc is a great way to go.there was a recent thread about the 150-500 v 300 & 1.4 tc.if you are going for a 70-200 too it cover all bases and you have the benefit of a tc for the 70-200 too.a d7000, 2 nikon lens and tc would not come in the £2k budget so there may be tc cmpatability issues if you went sigma.
