If you were in the market to buy a Nikon D90 now, would you wait and hope the price drops with the release of the new D7000? or would you actually wait and get the D7000?

I'll be on the market soon but D7000 is not the one I will go for :)

Depends on what the D7000 offers and what the price difference is. Also, was I happy with my camera? The D7000 is likely to drop in price around 2 mths after launch, so can I wait that long?

D90 is a very good camera. I do prefer my D300 so if I was to change it would be for the D700 or a D400?

impossible to call till we specs - it could be £300 quid more but offer little extra except dual card slots and a fancier model number which would cause the d90 price to rise as people snapped it up or it could offer much better high ISO etc causing d90 users to upgrade to it leading to a surplus of d90's on the market.

either gamble or wait two weeks for the announcement !!

D7000 features;

- Twin SD card slot
- 1080 HD video
- Continual auto-focus on video

Personally speaking, they are nice to haves rather need to haves.

where did that come from, surely there must a be a jump in mp? the D3100 entry had 14.1mp

Just wait until its announced....

Assume it would be 14.1 MP.

Twin SD, nice but not a reason for me to upgrade. As it stands the AF on video and HD are taken care of by my camcorder BUT, it would mean I have it all in my hand rather than 2 separate things. Think this maybe something I would like once I have it rather than would like now... if that makes sense!

I think a new sensor is likely - otherwise it would be called a 90s or 90x

the last guesses I read was

16MP DX sensor
same noise performance as the D700
full HD video
8fps
partly aluminium construction

However if this is true I can't see why anyone would buy a D300 unless the new D90 is a lot more money than the existing one.

and with the same noise performance as the D700, Nikon will be working miracles with an APS C sensor....

I can see the point of 2 and 3, but twin SD card slot? it would be much better to have 1 SD and 1 compact flash to ease the transition costs from entry level body to higher spec body...

+1.. I highly doubt they can/will do that... If so, D300s replacement need to be even better... too good to be true :D

If you wait for the D7000, will you not then want to wait for the d8000...etcetc
Whatever you buy will be replaced in a year or two

Its better to have something in your hand you can use, than waiting for something that may never appear.

Whilst we all want the latest and greatest the new D90s/D7000 whatever will not suddenly stop my D90 S5pro and D60 from taking great quality images.

If the changes are just to the video it's of no interest to me at all. If it's higher MP count WITH at least equal ISO performance, then theres benefit. If the FPS really does go to 8 fps then thats a benefit to me (but I doubt it will happen as that will undermine the D300s)

It's really all about what we want from a camera for our particular use/style....

Best thing is just to wait. My only speculation is that it will feature a new sensor as it appears Nikon are now making their own rather than using Sony.....otherwise, who knows?

I am currently wanting to buy an additional camera and have my current D5000 as a back up. I have been anchoring after the D300s but with the new features rumoured in the soon to be released D7000 why would I buy a D300s over this model? I know there are a lot of factors involved but how much difference will the higer MP count and different processing engine make to the image with a like for like lens against the D300s? Or should I just wait for the release & reviews?
And I am suspecting I will need the DNG raw converter for CS5 seeing as a new model usually results in a different variety of file (always baffling - why can't Nikon raw be Nikon raw)......................?

The new D7000 is reputed to be $1200 so quite a bit more than the D90.

Its also supposed to be 16mp and have 24,600iso due to a new sensor which has the electronic support circuit on the back of the sensor rather than the front as at present so letting more light reach the sensor pits giving better noise than is possible at present.
Its announced in 2 days so not long to wait. There are hefty rebates on the D300s at present so Nikon are probably expecting some hit on the D300 from the new D7000.
Knowing this was coming, I bought a second D90 body new from HongKong (eBay) for £480 plus shipping last month as they are so cheap.

At the end of the day it depends how much you want to spend, £500 on the D90 which is excellent or £850 on its replacement which will be better but 50% more expensive.

I dont see D90s dropping a lot in price until the new model does as well as the price difference is so large.
