Hello! Thanks for reading my thread, my pride and joy has stopped working properly. My local photography repairs shop quotes 150 quid on a fix. The problem is the 'box' (which i am assuming is the mirror box) is broken.

Is it possible for me to repair this with ordering the part? Do you have any other suggestions/repair shops to reccomend.

Its just 150 quid is pretty much all my D70s is worth now anyway.

Worse comes to worse I will have to buy a Nikon body only. Looking to 'move up in the world' from a trusty D70s :) any suggestions of this.

My main purposes are show photography and portraiture and maybe a bit of Marco and Landscape... pretty set with Nikon, as i can use the kit lens from my D70s :)

Thanks! :)

Jamie

Sorry I can't help you with parts but what I can tell you is this:

£150 is pretty damned cheap,

IIRC Fixation (great service btw) charge £130 for labor alone... so you might be saving on a lot of time and effort to just get it fixed

I think you'll have a job getting the parts, I'm also fairly sure it's a bigger job than it looks to take apart and more importantly put back together.
Personally I'd put the money into something newer, D90 maybe if budget allows. Does your insurance cover it by any chance?? Wayne

But....
For £150 (+ postage) you could get THIS

Not sure how much of an 'upgrade' it would be though.

Thanks for the link dude.
But I'm looking to progress up the ranks...enquiring about a D200 body to use with my kit lens :)

Odd realisation.
Every third photo is fine, still with 'Err' message though.
Means I can still use it for my show im doing tomorrow (voluntary)
Not practical, but it'l have to do...
Does this give you guys any clues?

I've got a D70 (same basic internals) "spares" camera, if you let me know which bit it is you need and make a donation to TP (using the Donate button at the bottom of the page) then I'll send it to you, assuming it isn't broken on my D70

Good call ;)

Not trying to put you off or owt, but just to bear in mind that the D200, although a stunner, is pretty poor at high ISO's. 400 and beyond is terribly noisy.....

As Wayne said, if you can, put a bit extra for a D90, or even D300 :woot:

Flash...a tru GENT (most of the time) good one mate and andy SOD OFF:lol::lol::lol: you are right but I would say its at 800 not 400 but I only go to 200 so wouldnt know :lol:

 FITP
 Pete :D

Ok, it's me being fussy. 400 isn't that bad, but 800 bloody is

That is really kind of you! I'm really grateful, or course i will send any expense.
Apparently i have a problem with the 'mirror box' casing. I will find out more.

Can you please PM me a contact number? So i can explain easier? At a reasonble hour, obviously!

Will I be able to pay someone labour to fit it, is that easy to find?

Thankyou again. I am lost without my camera!

Jamie

:boxer:c,mon lol dont know I only use 100 and 200 .........the sky is bright ......but yep poor for high iso is its weak point and I will set Eileen on anyone who wants to fight:lol:

Sorry for the slight hijacking on your thread Jamie!!

Good luck mate, I'm sure Flash can sort you out, he's a TOP MAN :1st:

The one I've got has been "dropped" at some point, so I'll need to check what kind of nick the mirror assembly is in. It's a fairly straightforward job to strip a D70/s if you're patient and can handle a screwdriver.

Let me go and dig it out and I'll see what is left of the D70...

Jamie, I've managed to find this old D70 - the mirror assembly looks as if there is some damage to it as the mirror isn't closing properly, but if you have an idea of what bits you need then pm me and I'll see what can be salvaged.

I think the part you'll be needing will be something cheap, maybe £20 or so new, the rest of the £150 will be labour, by the looks of things it would be a major strip-down to do the repair.

I am under the impression that the mirror casing, not the mirror itself is cracked. Will ring up the shop on monday and ask for details :)

Is it best to PM you info?

If you can find out what part it is and pm me then I'll see if I can extract it for you, but as I said the repair cost is likely to be mainly labour.

I'd be tempted to stick the camera up on Fleabay the way it is, you'll likely get £100-150 or so for it with the fault declared...

Thats cool, and fleabay would be my last resort :)
Depending on how tricky it is, it may be attemptable, but it might be an epic fail. I think it is worth me doing so labour research, maybe ask a few people if they have and labour experience. I am a regular at the shop I took it too (the 150 was from Nikon) maybe i could provide the part, they could do it for cheaper. I know they are a small business and will do anything to hang onto custom and generally understanding chaps.
Do you think it attemptable with a steady hand and an entire evening? if so, where would i find instructions/diagrams? im guessing its good to go in with some inst/diags.
Googling away now for them!

Right. Cleaned the contacts with alcohol fuilds and the 'err' has vanished. Odd.
But still hasn't fixed the prob, but its progress. Its Odd how consistently its ALWAYS the 3rd shot is normal and the two between vary one very dark the second lighter and the 3rd normal.
I havent got it stuck on a mode that varies the apeteture have I? I dont really use modes much, i have tried a button reset.
Looked the the area surrounding the mirror (im assuming the mirror is the thing that looks liek the mirror! :P )
And it doesnt look damaged.

Do you agree the 3rd shot pattern is odd?

err....you have bracketing switched on. Switch it off and all will be well in your world ;)

Well, they said that in the shop. What the HELL IS BRACKETING and how do i get it off! :P
lol
I have a cautious suspition I may be a lucky little b****r!

I know where it is, just not how to turn it off! its the BKT button. I found it in the menu too.

Right, I have disabled braketing (not in the top LCD) and Reset it both ways (marked green buttons and the bottom button) Is it possible it has got itself stuck in BKT? Err is back, still consistant pattern images.
