Hey all, this one is a bit weird for me... On the back of the Nikon D7100 there is the switch for pictures and video yes? now, what is the difference in these two modes as you can take video and picture in both modes. What I think I noticed however is, when looking through the view finder I can get sharper pics if the dial is set to picture and not video, would I be correct in saying that? e.g. yesterday I tried to take a few pics of a boat in the water and could I get it perfectly steady? not a chance, and I was going mad, just seen then that the switch was set at video, changed it to picture and I seemed to get sharper shots? or.... Is this all in my head?
 
Hi, I don't actually have a D7100 but if it's the same as my D800 then it's the switch for when you're in live view mode and will not make any difference to what happens when using the normal viewfinder.

You mean live view mode, as opposed to video?

If you take a still while looking through the viewfinder and then take one via live view you are still using the same mechanism for taking the shot, but the key thing to remember is that the live view has to disengage to allow the shutter and aperture to control the exposure. Therefore, that's why the image on the LCD disappears for a moment.

The thing about taking images in live view is that it's much slower because of what the camera has to do to come out of live view, take the shot, display the image then return to live view. Plus, I might be wrong, but the focus system in live view isn't as useable (not on my D7000 anyway) because it's using a different AF system that is slower to focus. Therefore, the moment could have passed.
 
Focusing using live view is much more accurate.
