Coming from a D200, so really like the fact I dont have to completely relearn a whole new body if I go D300S.

I have a nagging doubt that the 300 wont be a huge upgrade as it is reasonably aged now.

Your thoughts people ?

Sorry if this has been done already.
 
I have a D200 still, the D300 I recently had was a huge upgrade from the D200. Pretty much in every department.

Can`t comment on the 7100 as I have never used one.

Depends on what you expect from the camera, I've done the D200 -> D300 -> D300s -> D700 -> D3X route and now settled with a D800E as my main camera, along the way I've also owned Fuji S3 and S5's (S5 is same body as a D200) D7000, D5200, D5300, D3 and a few others

On of the biggest transitions that I struggled with was the D200 to D300 move, I used the group dynamic focus mode a lot and hated losing this but the big problem for me was the CCD to CMOS sensor, with the D200 I liked how underexposed images could look (and doing music photography in low light this was a good thing) but the CMOS sensor demanded much brighter exposures which kind of negated the advantage the higher ISO performance of the D300

I have never got on with the smaller bodies and the 'model down' feeling from the D7000 (returned my first one after a couple of weeks - tried again a year later but never really felt right with it)

Currently settled in my main kit with the D800E and a Fuji S5 as the second camera

I'm assuming that you're only looking at DX options due to lenses that you already have, my advise would be to wait to see what the upcoming D7200 is all about and perhaps depending on what photography you are doing, consider the Fuji S5 (especially if you have the grip for the D200) as they are currently going for silly low prices

I went from a D200 > D300 (stolen) > D300S and found the D300/S to be better in every way to the D200. That was 5+ years ago, and technology has moved on. You get a better sensor with the D7100, and the ISO and Dynamic range advantages that have evolved.

Saying that, there are some ways in which the D300S hasn't been surpassed by the D7*** range, and arguably by any APS-C camera yet. If for some reason I didn't have the D300S I would try to get another D300S because I like to take pics of a bit of everything and the D300S is the best camera for that imho. A 7D could fit the bill (at a pinch) as well if my lenses were to go as well. ;)

But if you want a high frame rate the D7100 has had the buffer crippled for some reason, and that added to the slightly slower frame rate, and the D300S is still better. (for me) It depends on what your priorities are, never shoot high frame rates and that is not as big a consideration. A D7200 may address those issues, but then there may also be a 7DII which should be better than the D7200 unless Nikon really update the specs of that. And there is speculation that if Canon release a 7DII, Nikon may release a D400. ;)

Would a new camera give you something you are really missing now? With what is available now, I would get a D300S, but try a D7100 to see if it is something you could live with, as some can't live with the compromises. If you can wait, see what a D7200 turns out to be, but as a D300S owner waiting for Nikon to deliver a D400, (probably never happen) some of Nikon's decisions can't be predicted, so waiting for anything could be a mistake. :confused:
 
Just reading more in the 7100, I wasn't aware it's a one third crop . What difference does/will that make in comparison with a standard DX of 1.5 ?

No bud - it is a 1.5 crop, with a further feature to further crop that - see this comment I just pinched...


4. Nikon D7100: Interesting 1.3x crop mode

Although the DX format means that the camera already has a 1.5x crop factor, an interesting new feature for the Nikon D7100 is the 1.3x crop mode. This gives extra reach when shooting with telephoto optics and is likely to be appreciated by nature, wildlife and sports photographers. When shooting in this mode, the resolution is reduced to 15.4 million pixels, but it does mean that the 51 autofocus points fill the entire frame and Full HD movies can be recorded in 60i and 50i.

had nearly every camera in the nikon mid range cameras ,out of your choices the d300s will outperform them all in every respect old sensor but superb i/q the d7100 i had 2 they both broke within a few weeks and i lost my rag and changed to canon.probably should have calmed down and just got another d300s .i now use a canon 1D mk3 of the same generation and it also takes some beating .high mega pixels and fancy video modes are useless if you don't or can't use them .caveat emptor

So,
Are you lot saying the d300 is the better bet despite being older tech?

I'd be very happy if that is/was the case .
