D7200 Dark Frames

What does the EXIF data show?
Have they maybe set the exposure compensation to underexpose?
I've done that :) by mistake
 
I had the same problem it turned out I had a faulty sigma 150-600mm lens. Lens was replaced no problems since
 
How many cameras are we taking about? Is it occurring with the same lens or different lenses. When you same dark frame is an under exposure or a completely black frame? Are there any custom settings or auto iso in use? Are we talking with exactly the same subject and lighting it’s occurring (ie ok exposure, ok , ok, dark, ok) rather than different subjects/lighting?

Not triggering may be because it’s struggling to achieve focus and the custom setting is set to focus if lighting is really bad or there is no contrast. Under exposed frames with auto iso could be because a changing in light or different subject with limited iso range set means the camera doesn’t have the leeway to get a good exposure.

You'll need to compare the exif of the underexposed frame to the next in the sequence that's good. Could be the lens. Both? cameras with faulty shutters, maybe but unlikely without an error.

Probably the best way forward. Its unlikely to be a fault with both cameras or both lenses but not unheard of. Like @twist says look at the settings of the images either side of the dark frames.

It would be interesting to see the examples. Are we talking under exposed frame or completely black frame? Are settings exactly the same on the good and bad exposures?
 
I'm at a loss.... the only thing I can think of is the odd occurrence of the same combination of user error. I.e. shutter release set to focus and unable to attain focus (MFD), spot metering, etc.
 
I've had this occur before on my D7200. Was at evening event on continuous shooting mode.

Pretty sure it was my 18-200mm VR DX lens that was onboard.

First 2-3 shots of burst fine, 2-3 totally underexposed images then back to normal again.

This happened on about 3-4 burst shoots throughout the evening. Only discovered when doing PP.

Only happened at this one shoot, a very changing light situation all the same but totally baffled me at the time.

That is exactly what the girls are experiencing but they have been deleting those images as they go along, trying to find if any have survived their culls

Weird. Logic would suggest this is some kind of contacts problem but I'm not so sure on that .........

Lets just say I'm eagerly awaiting the next firmware update for the camera.

Not only is the focal length showing as 8mm on 28-300mm lens the aperture value is going to its widest setting at f3.5.

Guessing the 13.5MP means it’s in a crop mode.

Thank you for your update.

I find it a very odd occurrence in fairness, considering the number of items involved and the fact that there is no known issue with this lens/camera configuration.

Have you tried cleaning the lens and camera mount contacts?

Do you use any accessory on the front of the lens, that would possibly strain the lens mount due to increased weight and cause contact issues - i.e. a ring flash?

Also, are the cards you are using listed in the chart below? Incompatible memory cards can cause various electronic issues with the equipment, although it seems less likely in this case.

Very odd, especially with it registering a focal length as 8mm on a 28-300mm lens :confused: Got to be a gremlin in the electronics somewhere for this to happen. Did you say you'd tried the lens on another body?

I have 6 or 7 of the lenses and a number of D7100s, D7200s along with a few other cameras and this has happened with 2 of the D7200s, it is infrequent and random. I came here to see if anybody else had similar happen and seems like I am not alone although Nikon say it is not a known fault, so have updated the firmware and cleaned the contacts and will see if it occurs again

In Nikon's defence, you may not be the only one with this problem but if no-one else has reported it to Nikon then it is "not a known fault" becuase they don't know about it :)

There is another potential answer and that is that they have seen the symptoms before but never found the fault, if I could find a way to get it to predictably repeat then it would be easier to help Nikon see if it is fixable, but I cant
