D750 inaccurate frame count

I've recently switched over to Nikon and I'm finding that the D750 gives inaccurate readings of available frames remaining. I've got a 32GB card in their and file size set to RAW only and I get roughly 580 images on the display but the number doesn't decrease commensurately with the number of frames taken. Anyone else notice this?
 
I've pretty much experienced that on every camera I've owned (except film, but heck, even that wasn't reliable!)
 
The 5D3 was pretty reliable. It's an issue because at weddings I usually swap cards when I get to 30-40 remaining and never want to be in a position when I have to unexpectedly stop due to a full card.

True. Did you manage to get 900odd on a 32GB card with a D750?
 
Image file size varies depending on the complexity of the image. One image may be 30mb yet another 20mb. The camera is roughly guessing how many images will fit on a card and it's probably calculating this using a larger file size than average. The number of images remanding is a guesstimate compared to film that was a known quantity.

Another way would be to have several sets of cards that you can swap as you get to different parts of the wedding day, that way you wouldn't be anywhere need a full card at an important moment.

I do this whilst I'm away for a few days photographing wildlife. Cards are swapped for empty ones at set points rather than how full they are. If a card fails then I don't have loads of images one card and lose what is probably the whole trip.
 
Do you always format the Card in camera prior to use? This tends to eliminate some false indications, as cards can retain small backup files despite deletion on the computer or camera of the images. Formatting each time seems to keep it accurate.
 
The nikon rates are a compressed, lossless file. The camera has no way of telling how big a file will be till it's written. Number remaining is only an estimate
 
I too have found the D750 way off the mark when the card is first inserted, on a 32GB card it will initially read 580 shots or something but often get over 1000 full sized 14 bit RAW files. I understand that Nikon applies lossless compression etc etc but the initial estimate is still pretty pants :lol: It's never bothered me though as it's never less than it states, and I know how it behaves. The shot count gets much more accurate the closer to zero it gets.
 
Thanks all, I ran a test by creating lots of copies of a batch of raw files and found that I could fit roughly 1050 on a 32GB card. Whilst not having an accurate space indicator is a pain, I can live with it. Having just switched over, I know the 5DMark3 was very accurate in that regard.

My other cameras have been much better too tbh, but again it's not something that's bothered me. I know I'm going to get circa 1000 shots so I ignore the count up until then ;)
