D80 needs upgrading - D300 or D300s???

Hi all,

It's been a while since I was last on here, probably because i wasn't spending much time with DSLR and the passion was frailing.....

However, i'm getting back into it again and feel the need to upgrade equipment.

Currently I have:

Nikon D80
18-200 VR
SB-400 Flash

I've decided to upgrade the flash to SB-700 but can't decide what body I should upgrade to???

Thought about the D90 but i don't think it's a strong enough step so is it the D300s or something else?

I'd probably be buying used so the difference between the D300 and D300s is around £200 (used).

Any advice on D300 v D300s and is it the right upgrade from a D80?

If you want video it would need to be the D300S as the D300 doesn't have it. That said I hear video is not to great on the D300S anyway. The D300S also has twin card slots, a quiet shutter option and slightly higher FPS. Otherwise they're identical so if none of the above matter, save yourself some cash and go for the D300.

Maybe also worth looking at the D7000 if you're playing with this sort of budget. Offers something a little different to the D300.
 
D300s video function is bad ....... The £200+ differents for a D300 and D300s is not really the convinced me at all. The D300s shoots 7fps default and the D300 shoots 6fps but both with battery grip and use EN-EL4 or AA batteries it can go up to 8fps.

Single card slot is enough usually
 
I own and use both D7000 and D300. Got the D7000 first then the D300 afterwards. I can tell you the D7000 is not a replacement for D300/s.

When you compare the two camera side by side it is completely different. Only reason for me to use D7000 is either i need to shoot something that require cropping then the 16 mega pixel will be handy but not big deal since i tend to compose before shoot. The D7000 ISO performance is miles better than the D300/s as images is usable up to 6400. The D7000 iso 6400 images is like my D300 iso 3200 images. Low ISO you can't really tell a different.

IF you talking about buffer size, the D300/s out beat the D7000. The D300 have 51 AF point and 15 cross type where as the D7000 is 39 AF and 9 cross type. When i had both in my hand and compare, the D300/s AF seems more quicker and accurate.

The d300/s is also more robust then D7000 because D300/s is full metal body and full weather seal, where as the D7000 is part metal and not full weather seal. But that doesn't mean D7000 is bad. Also D300/s is a pro body so you get full benefit of pro body features where as the D7000 is between the pro and consumer body.

Also D300/s have faster burst to shoot sports and wildlife.
 
I upgraded to the D300 from the D80. That was when the D300 were first launched. I've not found anything to replace it with yet. Get one. You wont do wrong. ;)

Can I just add, I had the same question a few days ago and am now the proud owner of a D300, the feel is rock solid compared to my D60 and it is sooooo much more useable. Also everything just seems so much faster. Don't have to wait for anything.
 
The D2x is more reburst but ISO performance is quite bad compare to the D300. Also the D2x is a crop sensor camera, just like the D300.

Same here and I have to say there's a huge difference between them build-quality and performance wise, far more than the tiny difference in used price nowadays would suggest.
 
When I was in your position, I upgraded bodies - I went from D70s all the way up to a D3s. And of course the features of the new bodies are great - and the pro bodies such as the D300/D300s are built to last and be 100% reliable. But the quality of lens, for me, is now far more important, and my advice would be to consider getting a couple of other lenses. It depends on what and how you shoot, but for me, quality glass would be the way to go.

That's my tuppence worth ...
 
Yes i definite vote for glass as well. I went from D5000 to D7000 then add another D300 to my list. When i use my glass on my D7k and D300 i didn't noticed any major differents to behonest.

Better body will give you more control on the camera but at the end of the day is the lens that makes the differents.
 
If you're after better quality shots then go for glass. Instead of buying a D300s I stuck with my D90 and bought the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 VRII and what a difference.

Don't let the video attract you as it's not very good unless you're videoing something that doesn't move and even then it's still not great.
