Ordered this used d800 from Wex late last year only used it on a few shoots came to use the liveview function the other day and it's making what I can only describe as a constant clicking sound. I'm not brilliant with descriptions so I've added a video for clarity. Does any one know if this is an issue or is it normally and should I be contacting Wex?

Adam i can definately help with this one as I have the Nikon D800 as well.
Absolutely nothing wrong with your camera to start with, the built in mike is picking up your lens auto focus noise. 3 ways of stopping it
first = go into shooting menu-movie settings-microphone-manual sensitivity and adjust to a lower level. You should easily find your way from here to up or down sensivity, follow the arrow

second use an extrnl mike ontop of the camera ( this is a sennheiser MKE400) also i added a height extender to get the mike a bit further away from the camera. Another thing was with a short lens the dead cat might just show up along the top of the video as it did with my camcorder

Camera with extrnl mike (music playing to prove extrnl mike working). Here off camera on separate stand using extn audio chord

without extrnl mike making same noise as yours. Notice focus change at same time

3rd way is to use manual focus only but that can lead to unwanted camera movement.

This should answer your question

Little bit more info

you will find wind noise excessive across the built in mike ,so much so it can ruin the video, my advice is to take the extrnl mike route, whatever make and fit a dead cat over it. Won't get rid of all wind noise but certainly helps

Ok why does this happen?

To me it is a design fault in the camera . the microphone 3 holes are right alongside the lens so no wonder it picks up every click of a lens

On close examination I found one of the holes was blocked as well so something to check for, I used a pin gently to open it up

Felt a bit like a dentist getting that shot

other camera was a Nikon D300 with a tamron 90mm macro lens and a cn-160 light and this taken quickly with my camcorder so DOF a bit out

That's the sound of the aperture lever constantly adjusting the lens' aperture to maintain a correct exposure preview. Switch it to manual or aperture priority and it should stop chattering.

lloyd can I point out it seems you have a Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera. TUT on yours

Even the presenter does not like using that camera mike

we are talking about a Nikon D300 which I also own
I tried in all modes and it does "chatter" (lens refocusing) whatever the setting, even with a prime lens it does it.
AS I said

1 = you could turn off auto focus but not a satisfactory answer
2= alter sensivity in the camera as I showed
3= use extrnl mike preferably off the camera if possible

Even think about a radio mike or putting one on a boom. Note, if you turn off inbuilt camera mike it also turns of extrnl mike as well , not a very well thought out plan

D300 body mike here (3 holes) right next to lens

@realspeed: I have a D800E actually, don't know where you got the 5DMkIII from (although those are very nice). It's definitely aperture chatter as I confirmed it last night with my own body. If you watch @Adam1987's video you can see that the chatter happens whenever the aperture value changes - the D800 doesn't even have continuous AF in LiveView mode so it can't be that.

Your own Home Page: http://www.lloydramos.com in your profile

So the pictures in it then we not taken by you??? The first one of the girl at the table was taken by the Canon camera which is where I got it from.
I would have assumed that in a home page the photographer would have preferred to show of what they can do with their own camera.
