Hi

Just getting to know the camera as I only received it yesterday (yay!!) but I have a couple of noob-esque queries.

In the box of stuff I got a ViewNX2 install CD and what looks like a CaptureNX2 credit card with a 25 digit code (I'm guessing a licence key of some sort)

What is this card for and what do I do with it? It says to go to the Software page on the Nikon website but the info seems pretty vague to me. I'm guessing I download the software, enter the 25 digit key and away I go?? :shrug:

What is the difference between ViewNX2 & CaptureNX2? If I download the Capture NX2 from the Nikon site will this come at an extra charge or is it free? If it is free why didn't they just bundle in the CD? :shrug:

Capture is a pretty decent package. I really recommend looking at tutorials online and buying a book. You'll find colour control points excellent and once you've mastered them you're away.
 
Ah right, so I get the full version FOC using the licence key on the card supplied??

Unfortunsately, CaptureNX is a 64 bit app and I only have a 32 bit machine. Pfffff!! :bang:

I think he could be correct.It is the D800E we're talking about. Massive files..

My mistake, it is 32 bit comatible, bit tired earlier. Going to download it now and take look.

Still need to upgrade my PC to 64 bit & 12gig ram. I mean, it's all of two years old now

If it's 2 years old it is 64 bit, at least the hardware is. Buy a couple of sticks of 4/8GB RAM (they're a slot in replacement, £35 for 2x4GB) and get Win7 64bit and you're set. :)

Best upgrade for a PC IMO.

You can see neither the CPU or OS is 64 bit. I would need to upgrade the OS just to add more RAM. An upgrade is in order but sadly I can't afford it or be bothered at the moment. :bonk:

The Athlon 7750 is a 64 bit processor ;) ....There hasn't been a desktop 32 bit consumer processor produced for nearly seven years.

That's not strictly true. The current version of ViewNX2 also includes editing features - albeit limited. I often use it for making quick changes to exposure, colour balance, etc.
 
nx2 is great for a quick tweek and a bit more besides. Ideal for a quick process of those raw files to send to friends and relatives as jpg's sharpen/resize etc - good point bristolian steve
 
How does CNX2 stack up against ACR?? My usual workflow is to tweek in CS3's ACR (with the occasional split toning) then export into Ps as a 16bit TIFF. I've noticed (at first glance) that the Recovery slider in CNX2 is somewhat lacking compared to ACR.(?)

Saying this if I wish to edit the D800's RAW files in ACR I either have to buy CS6 (something I'm tempted to do anyway) or LR4 or convert my D800 RAWs to DNG's and do it that way in CS3.

Is LR4 better for RAW editing than CNX2? I do like ACR for the first steps.
