Photographing the local Portrush Airshow today and yesterday and had a rather unnerving experience with my Nikon D810 freezing. It happened four times.. I was shooting with my 300/2.8 with the 20 TC III and light was excellent. In AF-C mode. This combination gave f5.6 which should be fine.
When I went to shoot, the camera froze and absolutely nothing happened. I had to fiddle with the controls and switch on and off to get it to work again. Any ideas? Anyone else had this problem with the D810?

Not my current D810 but a previous had to go back as it would not AF with my older 400 f2.8 AF-S II when any TC was fitted - Nikon said there should be no problem but there was. I never got to the bottom of it and now have the 500 f4 which has been faultless with TC's on my new D810.
 
Have you looked at the memory card? one that is "slow" will freeze a camera after a number of fps until it catches up with the camera.. My own preference is a 95MB/s 32gb card (Sandisk), ok it is a fast card but ideal with video work as well
 
Could it be a buffering issue? If shooting raw to twin cards on burst it does stop until buffering is complete. I use high speed cards and it happened once when I tried burst shooting.
 
My Nikon 'pauses' when I'm doing fast continuous shooting - down to the memory card - I have a Sandisk Extreme, but should upgrade to Extreme pro to speed things up
 
I'm using Sandisk 32GB Extreme PLUS with a write speed of 80MB/s.The problem happened after I had been standing awhile so doesn't look like a buffering issue. Beginning to regret getting rid of my D4!!!
 
Gramps it is marked VR G ED 2.8. Don't know if it's VR1 or 2
 
Easiest way to tell is if name plate is gold its mk1 if it's black with gold writing its mk2 (I also think the VR in red is mk1 and VR in gold is mk2
 
I'm probably way off the mark here but do you have a grip fitted.

Had similar issues with D7100 but only with the Nikon grip fitted. Sent the camera back to Nikon two or three times and they found nothing, on its return fitted the grip and the fault was back.

Yes the grip was fitted.
Anyhow apparently I can have the camera checked through Gray's by a Nikon approved repairer in London for just the cost of one way postage. No charge for the inspection.
