D90 basic set up

I just got a d90 on the weekend but am struggling to find a way to use it properly, its not as easy as the d50.

Does anyone have any good base settings for portrait usage.

Also on the RHS of the screen as you look at the back of the camera it has a switch L or O. I realise its to do with focus lock but what setting should it be on if I am not using it.

Please don't take this the wrong way but perhaps the best thing to do is sit down with a cup of tea with the batteries on charge and have a dash through the manual.
 
I got my D90 two weeks ago, having never owned a DSLR before (but having borrowed and played with loads of Canons/Nikons), a read of the manual and Ken Rockwell's D90 instructions sorted me out.

If you've had a D50 before you should really be pretty comfortable.

I got my D90 just over a week ago, I'm working my way through 'D90 for Dummies' - have also looked at Ken Rockwell's site.

If you change to single point focus, you can use the arrow keys to move to which point you want to use, then switch the focus lock to 'L' - that will lock it to that point. As far as I know, unless you are doing that, you can leave it to off.
 
I went through the manual last night, I just cant seem to get the same quality as from the d50. Also there seems to be a lot of stuff I am just not sure about.

I may try and find an idiots guide on youtube.

I will check out Ken Rockwell's site as I used his settings on the d50.

I read the manual a few times, ken rockwell's tips, then watched the magic lantern video on the D90. I'd recommend the magic lantern guide.

You won't need to now - you can print it out and read it on the bus / train / plane etc ;)

I took one look at the instruction manual of my old D90, and then put it away apart from a small techy problem I had with it. If you know how to use a DSLR already then the large part of it is pretty self-explanatory. Anything I needed info-wise I found on the net. :thumbs:
