Hello all, i am seeking a little advice on the purchase of a new camera. At the moment i have a D40x and i am considering getting a D90 and passing the D40x on to my daughter.
So the things i need to know are, is the D90 a big improvement on the D40x and also as i have a tamron 18-50 and a nikon 55-200 would i be better of buying a body only,

any thoughts much appreciated

The D90 is quite a nice step up really from a D40x. You get a better sensor, a motor drive, two dials and a lot more direct access buttons, a much better screen on the back and an amazing viewfinder.

I am probably even forgetting tons of improvements.

Also I will assume you have the 17-50 2.8 Tamron, in which case yeap buy body only you have a great 'walkaround' zoom.

I had a D40 before my D90 and I reckon it is a big step up in most areas, you won't regret it I'm sure. Compare prices for body only and with kit lens- I bought the body only as the price was right and like you I had some lens (35mm and 55-200) however if you find a good deal on the 18-105 kit it may be worth consideration. Your daughter will be using a lens on the D40x anyway so it may be best to have some extra lens about?

The D90 is a great camera - I'm really happy with mine!

A friend has a D40 with both the 18-55 & 55-200 kit lenses, but has just upgraded to a D90 that he bought with the 18-105 kit lens. He wanted the wider range of the newer lens, and also he is letting his wife have the D40 so still needed the extra lens that came with the new body.
 
I just got a D90 (over the weekend) as a main body, putting my D40 as a second and it's a whole different world. I got mine with the 18-105mm VR lens, and I've instantly fallen in love with the lens (already had 55-200 and 18-55). Depending on how old/able your daughter is I'd say buy the D90 with the 18-105mm, keep the 55-200 for yourself and pass the D40x and 18-50 on to your daughter.
