D90 / D300 - performance at high ISO

I've done a quick search but I can't find that this has been covered here before.

Very briefly I think I need to move on from the D40X which although light and lovely is an absolute dog at ISO1600 (and sometimes 800).

Now I basically have two options really - the D90 or the D300. The decision will be based on (a) how many pennies I can save and (b) which is better at ISO1600 and higher.

So, folks, any thoughts?

The D300 is better but how much better I can't be sure because I've not used a D90. Both are very good cameras and I think they may even have the same sensors which would explain why the ISO ability is virtually the same. For anything up to iso1600 I doubt you'd notice much difference and even over 1600 you'd probably have to look very close to see an increased performance in the D300.

I keep hearing that the D90 is slightly better but never pushed one really.

I can provide this, Was shot at ISO2000 on a D300 with Sigma 70-200mm f2.8
