I'm new as you may realise and I'm also very confused :thinking:

My D90 has an internal focus motor, dosen't it :shrug:

D90 has a motor, Tamrom 90mm has a motor, that's two motors, I don't understand.:shrug:
Which motor works or do they both work. If there is one in the body why have one in the lens :shrug:

Many lower spec slr's don't have a motor in the body, so they have to use lenses with built in motors, or shot in manual focus only. I know the D40 doesn't have one, possibly the D60 too?

The D90, and many other slr's higher up the range have the motor built in, but they are still compatible with lenses that also have motors. if you have the 18-105 kit lens, that also has a built in motor. This also explains why you have an autofocus switch on the body, and on the lens.

As for which motor is used, well I think the lens motor takes priority over the one in the camera body.

If you buy a lens without a built in AF motor, the D90 can still AF because it has a motor built into the body. Lower models do not offer this, so one advantage of the D90 over the lower models is that you can use a huge range of lenses that do not have any AF motors built in, and still be able to AF.
